Ted Richards, Super Ted or Jemima

Ted Richards is a third of the way through his first season with the Swans.

At Essendon he averaged about 8 disposals a game and it is up to 10 thus far at Sydney - no real difference there. He's taking 3.6 marks average a game, & he's taken some good contested grabs. On the negative side, his disposal is pretty terrible and he tends to get caught in the headlights a bit, a la his attempted baulk and subsequent holding the ball decision against the Bulldogs. Having said that, I thought his game last Saturday was very good. No one has really kicked a bag on him, but if memory serves me well, he seems to always get at least a couple of kicked on him.

From a different perspective, he came to Sydney wanting to play in the forward line and that has not happened, although he's bobbed up for the odd goal. Seems like he's slotted for a backline role as a tall defender playing on the second or third string forward behind LRT, Leo and B2.

He's probably keeping Vogels out of the team, so one has to consider his performance in that light. Dempster might also be playing more if we had not drafted Richards. Also, one has to ask how he would compare to Saddo doing the same job, but Saddo is not exactly setting the world on fire down at the Blues.

Is he a better long term option that Vogels? Is he living up to expectations? What is his future in the team? Is he Super Ted or Jemima?

Very difficult to say at the moment given Vogels has yet to play in 06!

Is he living up to expectations? Probably ... just. He was never a 'glamour' signing - IMO he's there to be solid without being exceptional. Much as I'd love him to turn in to a superstar!

He has been OK, doing just enough to be in the 22 but what i like about him is his versitility and marking ability. He will most likely be down back this week as well on Dixon. atm i would say he is a Super Ted.

PS. Loving the links to the photos Legs lol.

        A cleverly disguides HOTW?

        Great thread LA.

IMO it's his fitness that is holding him back. He appears to me to get tired and then makes poor decisions (the really slow dummy last week an example) as his first halfs have generally been better and then there is a marked drop-off in the 2nd half..

I think that this may be legacy from Essendon. The dons seem to be very poor finishers and unable to run out games. Swans ran over them last year, and all games from Round 2 on this year.

He's young and shows flashes of very clever play. Another preseason under his belt and I'd hope to see a much improved player next year.

          Moi?

Actually, after writing this I went for a smoke and it occured to me as I puffed away my life, that with BB being 29, perhaps he'll become out stop gap FF in three years? Maybe playing down back is a part of his education.

Where's the O'Keefe option in the poll?

BTW, the only way he can play forward is to SIGNIFICANTLY improve his kicking, which probably cost us against the Dees.
Looking out for good omens which can bring the Swans the 2007 premiership

So I suppose that makes him more Jemima than Super Ted?
A good point from Lucky Undies re: stamina. He does seem to play his best in the first half. Maybe he needs to be rotated just as much as the midfielders?

He'll get a chance to rotate tomorrow, Hawthorn often run around in circles.

                        Super Ted > Jemima.
                        always.
                        He has a sidekick.

Perhaps our Teddy needs 1 too.

In regards to he's a terrible kick, that can be fixed surely?

He played quite well in the 1st qtr against the Tiges in the fwd line. Not sure if that was where he lined up, or just ended up there due to their uber flood.

Not uber flood, remember they are a Melbourne team, so they were "getting men behind the ball".

I think you need to measure his success against what he cost us. And thus far he hasn't shown anything to suggest he was worth the 1st round pick we gave up for him.

Interesting to note (and I'm not bagging this trade) that Lynden Dunne who the Dees picked up from the pick we gave them for Jolley looks like he will be a very good player.

I guess the comparison to be made here is that Jolley was a key component of last years premiership team.

Does anyone here think that Ted has the potential to be a key component in 2006?
