Out Of Bounds deliberately.

What was it with the umpires this weekend with OOBD? There was three paid against us today, one of which was when a player (Can't remember who) was slung as he tried to get it to a team mate and it went out.

But by far the worst one was when Luke Ablett kicked the ball about 50 metres down the line and it bounced out, the decision, OOBD. The starnge thing is that almost exactly the same thing was paid against Geelong yesterday. Have the umpires been told to crack down on this, or is it just stupid umpires making dumb decisions again?

I think the interpretation is that if you kick down the line and it goes out without one your teammates within a reasonable distance away they will pay a free kick. They are trying to get players to kick to a contest further up field instead of gaining metres and a throw in. With the Ablett one when it happened I knew the Free kick would come due the new interpretation.

Does that mean they have changed the interpretation mid season, because they didn't appear to be paying it that way earlier in the year.

Not sure but I do remember discussions earlier in the year on Fox Footy with Derek Humper Smith regarding this rule. But I agree it seems a bit hit and miss.

From what I saw this weekend (and most other weekends as well) this quote could apply to most umpiring decisions.

At least Sydney got away with a win. The umpiring was awful in the Fremantle-Richmond game. There are some very upset "fans" on

And of course if it comes up on Tues night's WLF, DHS will just say that if its a skill error, that's just too bad, they don't take skill errors into account when assessing deliberate OOB.

Which is absurd, because by definition that means it wasn't deliberate!!

Exactly, but that is the argument they use when paying deliberate OOB when trying to rush a behind but hitting the post or whatever....

The deliberate OOB paid against Ablett was ridiculous.

The umpires took that rule for grantled in the Swans vs. Kangaroos match with a few OOBD obviously incorrect decisions. Those OOBD decisions remind me of the handball that was supposedly deliberate and ultimately cost the Swans the match. I think you guys know which match I'm talking about...

I think the benefit of the doubt has shifted away from the player, which is disappointing because sometimes a 50m kick down the line into open space is often a great piece of play.

Some of the HTB decisions were pretty ordinary too for both sides.

The slung player was Jude, and I think the 3rd one was B2, handball up the line.

I've always had a problem with any rule that asks the umpire to determine the players intent and thoughts, they cannot know what the players are thinking.

The rule should simply be something like if the ball goes backwards and over it is OOBD. (Out of Bounds Directly)


Deciding what the player is thinking gives the umpires too much latitude and room for ambiguity.
