    Don't expect too many changes

"If you keep losing then I think you've got to start turning players over and just keep refreshing and renewing,'' Roos said at yesterday's recovery session at Coogee Beach.

"I went through this morning and looked at how many guys hadn't trained much over the past two weeks. It was about 11 of them.

"What we need to do is make decisions on how fit they are to play senior footy. Have a look at what their form's like, would they benefit from a weekend's break?

"Will they benefit from having a really good hitout in the seconds and playing a good 120 minutes?''

Roos would not elaborate on which 11 senior players are struggling with injuries and may be in line to be dropped or rested.
The only thing Roos is certain about is which young players starring in the seconds are in contention to come into the side.

"There's probably five. You've got (Luke) Vogels, (Paul) Bevan, (Sean) Dempster, (Tim) Schmidt and (Jarred) Moore,'' he said.

"But I'm not going to make five changes. We are just going to have to work out the match-ups.''

The toughest challenge for Roos this week will be to decide which players to demote or give the weekend off.

One minor change I would like to see is if Nick Davis starts on the ground every game, name him on the ground and not on the bench. Roos has said that he doesn't think the way the 22 is named matters, but I can't remember how many times he would have been named on the bench despite being a first 18 player.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I think we all know by this stage this is no suprise. No wholesale changes will be made. You might see a Richards get left out, and thats about it, in the grand scheme of things that isnt a big change. Roos needs some goolies to actually demote a senior player, and hes yet to show he has them.

        I suspect we'll see:

        Out:

        Williams (inj)
        Mathews (inj)

        In:

        Bevan
        Dempster

The interesting thing about that list of names is the absence of David Spriggs. He certainly up there with Schmidt and Moore for midfield effectiveness on Saturday and has been pretty good every time I've seen him play this year.

I notice Dempster was named as a potential in, but in my view he is one of the players who has been out of form all season. Even in the reserves his contributions haven't been great**

Doesn't provide much encouragement for the guys who are playing well week in week out.

The players being nursed through to get them right for games are believed to include key forwards Barry Hall and Michael O'Loughlin, number one ruckman Darren Jolly, midfielders Ben Mathews and Jude Bolton, and tagger Jared Crouch.

In all fairness to Dempster he was playing fullback in a game where the result was 203 to 33. And this is common. Its hard to play well when you might only get one touch all game.

I think they were doing that to keep him fresh, as he was listed as an emergency. Often our emergencies seem to be given easy jobs, or only played for half a game, just in case. It's tough to impress under those conditions.

Roos said, while they were able to get their best players on the field, a number of them could not play a full game. The Swans have been the envy of the league, using only 24 players because they have had so few injuries.

But Roos said that figure was not "a badge of honour", and it was time to inject new talent into the side.

"The issue is how to get (our form) back. A bit of it is by trying to get some younger players in the team and just freshen up the team. If you keep losing, you have to start turning players over and keep refreshing and renewing."

Roos said he had not made changes sooner because most players had been in good form until recently.
Roos is so full of @@@@. It's been three weeks in a row that the side has struggled and some of those injured players have been on and off with form for a while.

It's poor coaching IMO. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that eventually the injured players will need a rest and you need to bring some young players in early and gradually to add to team balance, depth and freshness.

The lucky run of injuries last year seems to have been misinterpreted as something we expected would continue.

fair point about last game erin but i was talking about his whole season where he hasn't taken the game by the scruff of the neck when playing in the 2s and has looked pretty average in each of his senior games this year

I agree, which is bizarre considering he really needs to fight for his position in the seniors.

I don't remember Malceski really dominating too many reserves games either?

And when Saddo went back there he just looked bored.

When Malceski plays in the reserves, he is a definite standout and consistently puts in great performances. Same with McVeigh when he was there the last few years. Schmidt isn't as flashy as those two but he completes the midfield trio that really dominate the reserves.

Absolutely - Malceksi stood out last year like a sore thumb.

Moore is probably on a level with Schmidt - ie not quite up there at the Malceski level but very busy. And you probably notice what Moore does a bit more than Schmidt because he's a little flashier.

LRT was clearly a class above when he played in the reserves.

Schneider too, though he didn't dominate, looked something special at that level even in his first, injury and illness interrupted year.
