I've got a sneaking suspicion that after being on the 'dropping/promoting/dropping/promoting' roundabout that is the fate of all marginal players in 2005, Roos and the selectors have decided to take the 'LRT 2005' approach to McVeigh this year. They've more-or-less guaranteed his selection, and said 'we're going to give you some specific jobs for your development: go out and do them, but we'll back you. Don't be frightened that if you @@@@ up it'll be the end of your career'. Now they'll turn around and drop him for Mathews next week and prove me wrong!

He is growing in confidence and footy smarts week-by-week, and so the strategy seems to be working. Not that McVeigh's talent is, or ever will be, as a defensive midfielder or tagger.

Very very few of our midfielders have ever averaged a goal a game (Paul Williams in the 2001-3 period is about all), so 13 goals from 13 games is a very handy return in a team that in 2005 relied disproportionately on its 'big 4' to score.

If Sheedy ever had the magic touch with trading in mature talent (and trading out mature no-talents and chronically injured players), he's now lost it: his big trade week achievement in 2005 was Scott Camporeale. (Admittedly, it cost him nothing but plenty of cash and a spot on the list that could have gone to a youngster; but the price was probably too high.)

I still think Mark McVeigh is top quality.
Yeah, I guess Richards isn't all that bad considering who was the last Essendon player we traded for - Andrew Bomford.

McVeigh isn't a bad player by any means, the question remains what would he cost. If Essendon received a first round pick for a fringe player in Richards, the mind boggles at what they would want for McVeigh.

Exactly the way I see it. I think he's coming along nicely. Definitely gaining in confidence.

Considine was hopeless. O'Brien came from St. Kilda, but yes I agree was terrific. I still hate David King for what he did in 1996. Plunger was just OK, was good for Port anyway (apart from one notable exception!!) and a lot of blokes could look good crumbing around Plugger when there's three blokes on him. Eustice OK. Taubert OK in a dud team. Neagle terrific although a front runner.
Think the likes of Bomford & O'Connor and you're getting closer to the truth.

In defence of Sheeds re Campo he was in the PSD and was selected for a purpose. I reckon your last pick you can have a punt on an experienced, older 'proven' player.

Had to love his "roving the pack" goal. Was just missing the silver platter.

We didn't trade for O'Connor though - he came in the draft.

It's the golden rule of trading. Even Carlton refused to trade with him for Camporeale and he ended up going there through the pre season draft.
I thought we should have made a play for McVeigh a few years ago but wouldn't bother now.
Lenny Hayes is a different story though...

McVeigh is just starting to come along

                    More consistent game time helps

His goal conversion is quite good this year

previously he missed too many shots - maybe with more game

                    time comes confidence and experience.

He has a great motor - he is not an in and under player

that will be my love child JARED MOOOORE !!

I don't mind seeing youngsters given a tagging job on a good oponent, they can learn a lot.
Sometimes however we seem to pick the wrong taggee, skinny McVeigh on Nuggety Ball this week or rugged Nog aganst creased lightning Judd in the GF last year for examples.

We all knew McVeigh had great endurance and last year most of us realised he had a very good afterburner as well, the only concern for me is how little muscle he seems to have put on in 4 pre-seasons, he can still be brushed off too easily (even for a prospective outside midfielder).

I liike the looks of McVeighs skills, I agree that more game time has assisted in his growing confidence. I think he will continue to develop into a good consistent midfielder.

I have been pleased with McVeigh this year,I think the fact that Roos has actually perserved with him has given him confidence and he is definately an improved player. It was good to see three of our youngsters,Moore to Schneider,Schneider to McVeigh and GOAL was very encouraging on Saturday night.
I don't know who wrote it but Jarrod McVeigh is one of the players that Essendon are supposidly approaching for next year. The list was in the Herald Sun but McVeigh being a Sydney boy would want to stay home, you would expect.

Maybe Mark may want to come to Sydney to be with a successful team, and his brother.
