I've got a sneaking suspicion that after being on the 'dropping/promoting/dropping/promoting' roundabout that is the fate of all marginal players in 2005, Roos and the selectors have decided to take the 'LRT 2005' approach to McVeigh this year. They've more-or-less guaranteed his selection, and said 'we're going to give you some specific jobs for your development: go out and do them, but we'll back you. Don't be frightened that if you @@@@ up it'll be the end of your career'. Now they'll turn around and drop him for Mathews next week and prove me wrong!
He is growing in confidence and footy smarts week-by-week, and so the strategy seems to be working. Not that McVeigh's talent is, or ever will be, as a defensive midfielder or tagger.
Very very few of our midfielders have ever averaged a goal a game (Paul Williams in the 2001-3 period is about all), so 13 goals from 13 games is a very handy return in a team that in 2005 relied disproportionately on its 'big 4' to score.
