Greg Baum article on footy culture

Quite a good piece which talks about the issues surrounding the recent Aker et al brushes with footy culture and cult of the "group". Perhaps also exposes some of the hypocrisy connected with the ethos.

Typically, a team that wins is said to have good culture, a team that loses is said to have bad culture, with notable exceptions.
So true. I couldn't give a toss about culture. What I care about is if they win and they play good football. A good team culture helps win games, but it can't win them by itself.

Sydney's exasperation with Davis is understandable to a point. But Davis has never hidden the fact that it is not within him to look upon football as a 24/7 pursuit. It means he has always been an outsider. Last year, as the Swans marched to a premiership, this was accepted. Now, in a leaner time, it is not.

But no team can ever be a perfect synthesis of like-minded zealots. The best, rather than demand conformity, manage the diversity. Hawthorn in the '80s had its share of mavericks and malcontents, but under Allan Jeans found a way to live with them and won many premierships. Arguably, the flags were their own culture.
    Yep. It takes all types.

Akermanis' faux pas was football's most grievous: he told the truth.
Yep, great culture - no truth!

The crux of the Brisbane-Akermanis problem was his media work profile. The agreement between him and the club when announcing his leave without pay was that nothing further would be said by either party. The next day, there in print was captain Michael Voss and his thoughts on the issue, and not in his paid column. Then, it seemed that there were rules and there were rules.
    Sounds familiar...

Whenever a large institution sets itself up against an individual, the institution will win: and on occasion it will do so by ignoring the rules that it accuses the individual of violating. This is one of the accurate points of the article.

But the whole "his only crime was to tell the truth" sob story is just a load of bushwa, and always has been. It's in the media's interests to perpetrate it, because it needs stories; and to get stories, it wants as many people as possible talking as often as possible.

The fact that something is "the truth" doesn't grant you a magic cloak to blab about stuff where any 10 year old would know you should keep silent. Aker seemingly likes publicity for its own sake, and hasn't learnt this lesson.

Following are examples of 'the truth' which any player would be a complete freakin' idiot, and deserving of censure, for uttering in public:
"Bazza has a very brittle collarbone which hasn't quite healed; one good whack there could easily break it again."
"I've never liked Kev, from the first moment I met him. He's a selfish fool; but I've got to tolerate being in the same team as him."
"Movements are afoot at the club to sack the coach; there's a 50% chance that he'll be gone before year's end."
"As far as I'm concerned that umpire is a ****in' cheat; every game we've got him I know we won't get a fair go."
"I'm looking to get traded at the end of the year, because I demand a far higher salary and a longer contract than the club is prepared to offer me."

      Etcetera.

Has anyone (with any credibility) suggested that Davis is out of the team for being "different" as opposed to not adhering to procedures designed to keep himself in a physical state to play good football (such as turning up to massage sessions, adhering to a diet appropriate to his chosen profession etc)?

Of course the club's not going to come right out and say it, but they would not be credible anyway.

Do you write the press releases for SSFC? I swear every post of yours is like reading a press release.

Say something that is a little bit left field Liz, I dare ya.

Yeah Liz, surely you know by now that there's no place on RWO for thinking through an issue, considering both sides and talking about it in an even-handed way? Don't you realise that baseless assertions are much more convincing? And where's the character assassination? Where's the name calling?

              Get with the program.

Actually, it's not particularly clear exactly what he was dropped for.

But you and other white ants will of course adopt the possibility that is most favourable to him and unfavourable to the Club and Paul Roos.

The various stories emerging from the Swans certainly open the door to the possibility that their pants are well ablaze.

Irrespective of whether you agree with Davis being dropped this year for being a lazy @@@@head, I think some (myself included) are getting fed up with the hypocracy and sanctimony around the club.

If they had dropped Davis last year for being a lazy @@@@head then it would have been okay to drop him again this year

If you want players to keep their snouts out of the media trough, don't double up by laying into players in the media

If the club policy is to select on effort and mindset rather than effectiveness, just friggin well come and and say it instead of this endless spin.

This whole bloods thing has started to make me feel uncomfortable, because like any dominant credo, it ultimately creates insiders and outsiders. Some of the insiders, quite frankly do not deserve their spot in the team based on effort alone because they are not contributing to the team in fact. Great, demote players who are being lazy @@@@heads, but equally demote players who are trying their guts out and contributing squat. Seniority and past records should not come into it. I am sure that will be quite an effective approach.

As for those who think the current approach worked well enough last year and therefore should work well this year, that's just wishful thinking. It worked well last year because the players happened to be in form, they were hungry and injuries were few. Different story altogether now.

I blame the current state of play on that horrible sales poster that says '99% perspiration, 1% inspiration'. Maybe Paul Roos has that in his office. I prefer a meritocracy - effectiveness = talent x hard work. If either is lacking get out of the way for someone else.

He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.
