The last thing I want is to have people around me NOT concentrating on the footy when the game is on.

Richard Zachariah even write an article on how flaky Sydney fans are in comparison to Melbourne footy fans. In Melbourne EVERYONE is gloued to the action ALL THE TIME. In Sydney you get people only half watching the footy everywhere you look.

Seriously, save your idle chit-chat for the bar before the game. Or at half time. Meet up at the Fox & Lion a couple of hours before the game to socialise. Or go back to the Social Club after it for the cheap drinkies.

    JF
    Thats utter bull@@@@.

I have been to the footy in Melbourne with people around talking "chit chat". And NO, they are no Sydney supporters. They are usually opposition supporters.

I think you need to get out of the CS, occaisionly, and see what the real world is like.

      Agree.

One comment was at half time, and the other was when I arrived (part way through the 2nd quarter - long story!)

The 2nd quarter comment I can vaguley understand as I was catching up with the guys, relaying the story of the night etc, but half time was too much!

I've been to cricket matches before with people behind me swearing profusely for an entire day, and have just dealt with it.

Our level of discussion was no where in that league, and I would probably say no swearing at all - that wasn't the problem.

Football is life, but its also entertainment. Why can't you have a night out with some mates and both enjoy the footy and their company at the game, not just at the pub before or afterwards?

Will we be seeing more FOOTY TALK POLICE next game?

I'm with JF on this one. I find it extremely annoying when people turn up at the footy to socialise in the first instance and watching the game becomes secondary.
If I'm watching the game and cheering on the Swans, abusing umps etc I don't want to be told to quieten down so people can carry on their converstaions about the kids, little Tommy's grade 3 teacher or plans for the latest home renovation. Get back to your 4WDs in Balmoral for all I care!
No wonder Sydney crowds rarely seem to get involved!

I agree with you - if you plan to socialise the entire game.

Surely common sense prevails and a 5 minute conversation is allowed, especially at half time.

Phil, half time is fine. But in the Members / MA Noble area there are people who literally go to the game for the social aspect and really couldn't care less about what is happening on the field.

The swans encourage this, they even have a "Young Bloods" membership basicly made for networking etc.

You missed the point. You weren't being told to quiet down, Phil was.

So, are you saying that it's wrong to impose yourself on someone else 'space' unless the talk is not about football, in which case you can do your Balmoral thing and tell them to shoosh?

I hear all kinds of talk around me but I don't notice it because I'm completely absorbed in the game. The only time I would notice it is if I was either in a bad mood (in which case that person who told Phil to shut up was being a @@@@) or the crowd noise is not enough to drown out said conversation (in which case, most of the crowd are being @@@@s).

                IMHO.

Sometimes the chatter can become so irritating you can't shut it out. At the St Kilda semi a couple of years ago I was sat next to two girls who just yapped on and on about shopping in squeaky, whiny voices for the whole first half. They were with two guys and I think it was just a case of them being dragged along and having no interest in the game at all.

So while generally I'm in favour of "each to their own" there are sometimes when it becomes unbearable.

I think I just moved seats at half time in this particular case. It was either that or whacking one of them.

Most people support the guy on this, as do I.

I think JF advances a borderline hypocritical concept. He's saying that people paid good money to watch the football and have every right to tell people to shut up if they are not talking footy.

That almost lends support to those who tell you to shut up if you yell and scream footy too loudly, given they paid good money too...

I just have a serious aversion to complete strangers telling fellow strangers to shut up in public spaces simply because they don't agree with the subject matter.

It's almost like me telling somebody in Woolies to shut up about the new car they just bought because I'm trying to concentrate on which type of lettuce to buy.

While I do agree, some chit chat can be annoying. It is outrageous to suggest it happens only Sydney, and it is also outrageous to ask someone to stop talking/cheering yelling etc. That is a good reason to listen to the footy on the radio, then you can tune out what you don't want to hear. (Yes, I know, only old people listen to the radio at the footy).

Swearing or being abusive is a different matter.

Constant loud talking of any sort on any topic can be intensely annoying at the football.

Hey, we wonder why Swans fans cop so much crap on Big Footy. And who are the people copping being heckled for being "bandwagonners, fickle" etc etc; people like myself & Peter who DO travel the length & breadth of the country trying to generate interest and atmosphere in support of the team.

I'll defend my club to the hilt on Big Footy. But I cannot dfefend the indefensable.Sadly the people there are right.
62,000 is ok, but more would be expected in a union stronghold Only the North Shore is Union heartland. :p
