Our record against top 8 teams

    This year:

    Melbourne (1) - lost

Bulldogs - won (one of our best games of the season)

    St Kilda - lost

    Collingwood - lost

Fremantle - won (although I wonder how we'd go in their current form)

    Adelaide - lost

    West Coast - lost

Melbourne (2) - won (but they had 6 of their top 22 missing)

    So 3-5.

    Last year:

    Kangaroos (1) - lost

    Adelaide (1) - lost

    Melbourne (1) - lost

    West Coast (1) - lost

    Port - won

    St Kilda - lost

    Geelong - won

    Melbourne (2) - won

    West Coast (2) - won

    Adelaide (2) - lost

    Kangaroos (2) - won

    So 5-6.

Not great in either year, although the big difference was most of our losses last year came in the earlier part of the year and then we turned it around later.

Our performance this year in terms of games won has been similar to last year, but it doesn't really seem to have the ominous build up toward finals and the turnaround in wins over top 8 sides.

Again it points to the observation that despite superficial appearances, we are not really tracking as well as last year. Even a small drop off from last year will make a difference and there is a lot of work to be done in the next few weeks.

On the plus side, if they can hang onto a top 4 spot, the competition is so even it only takes a month of your best football to win the big one.

Very true o great one But i was at the game yesterday and i was very frustated with the extreamly poor disposals of every one.My local DVFL is better than that, and they want a pay rise they must be joking.Barry Hall should/must have tore strips off his chargers yesterday.IM VERY DISAPOINTED.:
Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

I think we are in deep poop this year. Our win/loss against the top 8 is poor. The next 2 weeks will show how well we are doing at home(even though they are bottom 8 teams. At least our away record is OK!!

I`m not feeling comfortable about it all.

Wins against top 8 is an overused and abused statistic IMO. We lost to St Kilda, Pies and Adelaide during our most out-of-form run of the year (mid season). We lost to WC by a small margin over in Perth. The form of sides varies so much over a season its a bit rough to compare wins in the early rounds with ladder position now.

All I care about is we beat Melbourne and lost to WC in this recent form run, so that puts us mid-top8...and look where we are?

BTW, Since we wont win 15 games this H&A can all comparisons to last year be thrown in the waste where they've always belonged. 2006 has no coleration to 2005 except that we have roughly the same players.

In the second half of the season we had defeated Freo, Melbourne and got close to west Coast at Subiaco. Slip up Saturday but in the frame of mind Geelong were in they would have beaten anyone.

The round has finished and all has really gone to form.

We will finish 3rd if the following happens:

            * We beat both Brisbane & Carlton at home

            * Melbourne losses one of either Geelong or Adelaide both away

            * Fremantle lose to West Coast next week in the derby

That is then a first up final against Adealide at AAMI, which will be tough but not out of the realms of possibilty.

I think it can make a difference as these are the teams you play in finals which is when it really counts. You can make finals by simply beating the also-rans and losing most of the time against the better teams. That may suggest that the team doesn't cut it against good sides exerting pressure.

We beat a Melbourne team with about 5 of their starting lineup missing, so that doesn't really mean a lot.

No it's not. Third will probably mean the same as last year - playing West Coast in Subi.

or fremantle wins next week and then where are we? maybe we finish 4th and then play WC @ subi? maybe that's not so bad either ..... we should just win all of our remaining games (with ND in the side) hit some good form and see where that leaves us ...

                    Last time I checked it was 1 v 4 and 2 v 3.

West Coast look most likely to finish 1st dont they?

West Coast at Subi is my preferred option anyway

The most likely situation at the moment is that we'll play Adelaide. Assuming Sydney beats Brisbane and Carlton (by large margins of course, ) there are two likely scenarios:

Adelaide is expected to win the next two (should easily beat Port but Melbourne would be more challenging), if West Coast win the next two they finish 1st and Adelaide 2nd. Sydney will play Adelaide at AAMI...

If Freo win the next two, there'll be a finals Western Derby for the first time and we'll play against Adelaide at AAMI...
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

No, sorry, you were right actually. I was thinking Adelaide and West Coast were still level on points.

So if we finish third we play Adelaide.

                        Fourth then West Coast.

However, a lot depends on the derby next week.

What's bizarre is all six sides from 3rd to 8th have the potential to make the top 4.

Talkback radio is going ballistic about the Derby. Should be a great match. My heart wants Freo to win but I think it would benifit us it WC grab it?

Are you seriously concerned about our loses to st Kilda and collingwood going into the finals ?
I'd feel pretty comfortable against both those sides at the moment.
