Well, this is the reverse of the medal.
I'm happy about the Bloods ethos; it's an approach that has helped considerably in winning a premiership by getting the best out of players who, in other clubs or other circumstances, would be 'good ordinary footballers'.
But the pressure goes on the coach if he finds himself at odds with the leadership group in a system that is player-powered. On balance I think I'd trust Roos to make the hard call when necessary - but I don't think it's going to be necessary with Nick. He hasn't just knocked on the door, he's knocked it down.
BTW I think a week or two off would do Tadhg and the team the world of good.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I certainly agree with all that you say here. Like in many things, there always needs to be a group that advises the number 1 in anything. That's how I believe the coach-leadership group should operate. The coach is the top dog, and the leadership group should advise him of how they feel and think, then he should make the final decision. But then that's just my experience from being in leadership.

I think that Davis has been punished enough. Its now become a drawn out saga for the media and keeping him in the reserves appears to be serving no purpose other than a very public punishment. While I dont think leaving him out of the game on the weekend was the reason we lost (I blame very poor delivery to our forwards), it certainly didnt help.

Davis needs a run in the seniors before the finals so I think they have to bring him in this weekend.

He's back. And thankfully his form on the weekend was really good too, so its hardly just an 'excuse'.

I am not convinced about his "form" being any different this week than it has been in the previous games. He tends to kick his bags against soft opposition. Seven goals is a handy excuse to bring him in though.

Your not convinced Paul Roos can coach either.

I guess he can only play against the opposition that is in front of him, and whether that will translate into good senior form, only time will tell!

Just wait for the cheers he'll get if he starts on the bench this coming weekend when he runs onto the field.

Ala Tadhg's return early on in the year! :-)

It really sucks. I have emailed, faxed and written again yesterday of my feelings and hope this time I get a reply. Probably not.
Does Sydney have a match committee that decides selections, or not? My understanding is, that it does; and it's not just there to mindlessly rubberstamp everything that Roos says (if it were, the raison d'etre of having a match committee would disappear). In addition, it is Roos'/match committee's stated policy to consult its decisions with the player leadership group before finalising them.

Therefore, the reason why Roos can't say on Sunday/Monday 'X player will 100% definitely be picked this coming weekend' is obvious. If you go back, Roos early in the week after the Adelaide game said words to the effect of, 'Nick Davis is one whose form and fitness will need to be looked at to decide whether he needs a spell', not 'I guarantee that Nick Davis will be dropped this week.'

For those who don't understand the dynamic between leadership and group decision making, an analogy: John Howard announced a few months back, 'I will be bringing forward a Bill so that all unauthorised boat arrivals in Australia will be taken offshore to have their refugee claims processed', not 'I guarantee that shortly the law will be changed so that all unauthorised boat arrivals in Australia will be taken offshore to have their refugee claims processed'. The latter statement would have been a bit silly, because despite being the grand pooh-bah, it wasn't in his power to give that guarantee.

If things are good between the leader and the group which has to approve the leader's ideas, then 99% of the time the leader will get his/her way; but for the leader to just announce things as a fait accompli without first going through the group, sours the whole relationship and causes resentment. Hence a bit of tact and circumspection is called for.

Which adds up to: don't worry-- Davis will be playing.
