The problem seems to be the grass underneath the stands when they move them closer to the field for RL. Of course it won't do the grass any good, if there are any concerns they should just leave the stands in AFL configuration on the weekends when both AFL and RL/Union are scheduled.

Though IIRC the ground was in excellent shape for the Brisbane game last year the day after the Bledisloe.

Alternate solution: Get Souths and the Swans to swap home grounds for 2007. It's not like Souths will be affected by the reduced capacity of the SCG or anything.

A game a week basically. Plus warm up games beforehand as well.

SANFL footy is only played there at finals time. And the fans HATE it!

Julian is becoming more pro Adelaide by the day!!!

I like the idea of leaving the ground in the AFL configuarion and then the NRL can work with in the parameters. When you conisder a league pitch is much smaller, I wouldn't think it would pose a problem, nor crowd control. Sure put it back the way it was for the Wallaby test which is about 2 maybe 3 games per year (because they get their large crowds no matter how badly the Wallabies are playing). Anyway remains to be seen how it turns out.

League is Telstra Stadium's bread and butter and it would be a terrible ground to watch NRL if the seats weren't brought in. In the end it's money that talks and the Swans only play there 3 times a year (plus finals).

Good point - oh well such is life - I guess they fill it for the SOO and the NRL granny - the rest of the time its almost embarrassing as to how empty it is.

I bloody hope that the Swans don't play at Telstra Stadium this weekend if the ground is unsafe

The last thing players need is to get injured

Especially since there is no swans players injured at the moment

Can they move the game to the SCG if able to ?

They key thing there is Footy Park (come on JF, if you are going to become a Croweater then stop calling it AAMI), is a purpose built Aussie Rules venue, rather than the majority of the rest being cricket grounds masquerading as Aussie Rules grounds.
The surface is prepared for football, grass being kept long knowing full well it won't grow so much during winter and the underlying soil relatively soft to allow roots to grow. Compared to the majority of other grounds, relatively hard in comparison on a more sandy soil with short grass, all designed mostly for batsmen to get full value for their shots.

Waverly Park (once they got the initial teething problems out of the way) had a similar reputation.

Oh, and they are playing some SANFL finals at Adelaide Oval these days but the Granny is always at Footy Park.

I think it comes down to Telstra stadium trying to cut costs. They pay the NRL teams some riduculas amount of money to play there, but only get 10,000 people turn up. They must be losing money hand over fist. They are trying to cut cost by doing minimal ground maintaince.

I seem to remember it has been in far worse shape before. And all it meant then was a week of media hysterics that ended in nothing more than a Y2K-style non-issue.

you are totally right - the last time it happened the new turf patch held up really well - there were no probs at all.

Not really. The Bulldogs are actually getting crowds as high as 30000. They got 27000 last weekend which for RL is near on excellent. It may still look empty to a degree. But both them and Wests Tigers are getting fairly decent crowds though.

Am still worried about us getting under 30000 for the first time at a Homebush game. I swear those Barry Hall Hall ads are so goddam dorky, they are going to repel people from going!
