Actually, they get a lot more than you think. Being an ex-tuggeranong player from way back when, i would have relished the thought of playing against a quality side like our reserves. Even more so if you found yourself on a Premiership player like Crouchie of Davis! And whilst the Canberra teams do get destroyed, its usually the 2nd half that is the blow out. They are often quite competative up until half time. The fitness, skill, and class of our PROFESSIONAL reserves players always outperfoms the AMATEUR players in the Canberra teams. You have to remember, the canberran are just normal guys with normal jobs, they dont live and breath football like our guys, and they certianly dont have the facitities, coaching, and medical staff that are available to our guys.

Playing in the ACTAFL also gives out guys the chance to travel and play true "away" games.

Whilst its certainly not ideal, its the best comp that is available to us.

Incidentally, VFL has a 'minimum 7 VFL, no more than 12 AFL' rule (I think adjusted pro rata to allow for games missed through injury) explained here. Further complications are that the rule doesn't apply for the first week of the VFL finals (because the AFL minor round is still going) and that a 'no more than 12 AFL-listed players in your team' rule applies to all AFL-club affiliated teams bar Geelong.

SANFL has a very lax 'minimum 3 games and you're in' rule.

I would be surprised if the ACTAFL has any qualification at all, because the incentives just aren't there as they are in other comps. In particular:
a) if Sydney 1sts are out of the finals, senior players would view the season as being over and would have no interest in playing, and
b) the Swans would want to expose the youngsters to as much finals pressure as possible.

Both of these things stem from the fact that (like it or not) the Swans don't count winning the ACTAFL premiership as a great achievement in its own right (at least not at the expense of junior development).

i love being able to watch our ressies before the main game. i don't think many other clubs get to do that. so yes the actafl is not the strongest, but the arrangement definitely has its charms!
