Freo matchups

Farmer and Pavlich are not the real problems, it is Heath Black coming off half back who is cutting opposition teams to pieces.

Tossing up whether Ben Matthews might be a good option for him as a lock down half forward flanker. Other option is to run Nick Davis on him and hope that Davis will hurt him going the other way which will give Black something to think about.

Who ever gets the job they will be the key to stopping Freo.

A) one continuing very simple technique, used by one particular Freo forward a few times last nite with great success/goals & by other teams, VERY SELDOM adopted by us, is the forward jumping to mark the ball and at the same time raising his knee to knock the opponent in front (at his back) just enough to get the opponent out of the ball trajectory. As long u have eyes for the ball & time it reasonable well, kneeing the opponent in front is not an infringement. Our forward coach is still not employing this technique.
We can lose out 2-3 goals to ths same smart Freo guy(with blond hair) if we dont adopt this technique to even out the goals, let alone getting more goals


B) We better learn from the umpires going into our games (from recent past games by the SAME umpires)
what is acceptable in pushing the opponents out of the way before marking
1) with half stretched arms or firm but short palm push or with full stetched arms etc etc. very subjective so far but must be learnt from these particular umpires rule tendency
2) push in the back - so many penalties given in all games - so mush waste

these infringements must be kept to the minumum, especially when the ball is in opponents forward.

Reduce the infrigements by these particular umpires and get ahead on the penalty counts or at least get even. We are still on the negative side of overall penalty count.

3) anyone know that our team is taking it easy like the reported lazy Adelaide team past 2 days? hope they go in hard in training & simulate games with hardness, not mucking around/sun tanning in the glorious sydney weather/sun next 7 days

Hey buddy, don't want to be rude, but did you ever play footy? This is called a pack mark. I spent most of my playtime in primary school either having some bloke take a specie over me by placing his knee in my back or trying to do the same to someone else. It is as old as the game itself. It's like saying 'did anyone notice how Freo did that thing where they run whilst bouncing the ball - we need to watch for that.'

If you want to see it done well, dig up some late 80's footage of Wacca in action.

Great minds think alike....I was reading the sun report which mentioned Black "not winning his own footy" but getting plenty free to dispose of it and I thought..."better run to RWO and start a match-ups thread which suggests Mcveigh on Black".

Has the gas to cause Black to be pressured and will be a worry for Black who doesn't run back that well backs hangs around waiting for others to do the hard work.

Macca almost had a great game on Cousins, the couple of times when he got hurt were when Cousins rolled the dice, didn't go for the contest, hung out the back for the cheap ball and got lucky. I've noticed that bothe Freo and Weagles players do this a lot, it's why they sometimes win by 100 and other times fall apart. when they win the contest of 2 on 3 their spare players will destoy you. It seems that at Subi we see a lot of a cousins/black type player strolling from 65 to 45 without an opponent to kick a goal. We need to force that type of player to be in the contest all the time.

bevan on farmer is a hell of a lot better than Mathews on farmer. bevan is very good in the air for a six footer. In fact I would say it's the best part of his game. takes a lot of strong marks going back.

Freo don't get numbers forward. Against Adelaide they were shocking...2 or 3 forwards to 6 defenders most of the time. just double team Pavlich instead of having Ted be completely loose. The others can be handled one for one.

Freo have a lot of good young talls. will win flags over the next five years for sure. we don't really have the webster types coming through...really strong athletic boys, ours are like ted, luke and LRT or a more trad forward like Heath. worries me beyond this year...but by then we will have two flags so why worry too much?

Just checked the match report from Round 11. Bevan was named in our best for his job on Farmer.

I worry that Jeffrey may be too strong overhead and generally have too many tricks for Schneids. CBolt does have a great record on Pavlich (though not so good this year) but I think we might need him on Farmer this time. I'm confident LRT would do a solid job on Pav.

As things stand today, Paul Bevan is a better more complete player than Ben Mathews. Ben Mathews performed poorly against the Toasters. Direct Swap. Besides, the reserves will benefit tremendously from Ben Mathews known leadership qualities.

I actually thought Mathews was reasonably solid against the Toasters. One of the frees he gave away was made up by the umpire and another was very ticky-touch. He also bobbed up in the right place at the right time a few days and did a decent defensive job on a couple of the lesser lights of the Eagles midfield.

There is absolutely no way Roos will drop him for this match. If he wants to bring Bevan in it could surely only be at the expense of Dempster.

Amazing how observers can things events so differently. I had the impression that Mathews was a total screw up in that game. Bu then, I am somewhat biased against him. I shall rewatch the game objectively.

Yeah, that's what I saw too. Couple of frees against in defence and baffling pressure-making handballs to teammates who basically had Eagles players riding their backs. Everytime he has the ball in his hands in the back 50, I start to sweat coz he's an 80% chance of totally @@@@ing things up.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did bring Bevan in, specifically for Farmer.

Pavlich takes most of his marks on the lead rather than in contested situations (although he is a star at both) so B2 is the obvious choice. LRT would not be able to go with him on the lead. He would be better in the wrestle/contested situation though.

Mathews played quite possibly the worst game ever played by an experienced professional AFL player (except maybe the one where Peckett handed Freo a game....twice).

Just start with THREE completely needless, and pathetic in the back frees in front of the sticks. Mind-boggling.

I think McVeigh would be a good matchup on Black. Macca did well against Cousins and putting him forward on Black would be a good move as he can kick goals as well
