    Victorian fans not happy

According a to Herald Sun survey of Victorian fans, they're not happy: http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/foo...E19742,00.html

(WARNING: RANT APPROACHING) Fine. I reckon we should allow whichever of the Victorian AFL teams that wants to leave the NATIONAL AFL comp to transfer to the VFL. If that means no Victorian teams in the AFL, so be it. Clearly, we dont need them anyway. If it did come to that (and it wouldnt, cause some of those teams wouldnt leave the best comp in the country), we'd plunder those VFL teams for all their best players, just like the VFL did to the other state comps before the formation of the AFL.

You can wear the shoe on the other foot Victoria, if you dare. Or you can wake up to yourselves, stop thinking and talking such parochial crap, and continue to help make this NATIONAL competition great by participating, becoming successful and not trying to destabilise it when results arent going your way.

And isnt it time that silly old Bob ("congratulations South Melbourne") Davis was quietly put into a home? (END OF RANT)

The Victorians have opened themselves up to it - when you hear about budgets for the likes of the Swans and Eagles for things like player development, it's no wonder they are hammering it on-field. How can a club like North Melbourne/Kangaroos hope to have a chance against teams with MILLIONS in their on-field budget BEYOND just player salaries?

It would be interesting if the membership lists of Fitzroy and South Melbourne still exist - do an in-depth survey with said members and find out how they reacted to their team relocating/merging and how long it took them to come back into the fold of the new entity. Then work out if the league can handle the time period where a particular team is relocated and flounders initially before picking up, and make the hard decision to relocate a team or two, or destroy them altogether. Short-term pain for some long-term gain for both the relocated club/s AND for the remaining teams in Melbourne - less competition should hopefully help increase revenue from things like sponsorship etc to help boost their budgets and on-field performances accordingly.

Nothing wrong with that rant Cruiser. Old Roy boy and I touched on the parachialism on Friday night. We were actually talking about Association Football being the world game and I said if it wasn't for the parochialism of the Victorians not wanting anyone to steal their game then the great game of Aussie Rules could have ruled the world.
        Bring it on!

Your last point is valid. I think this attitude stopped aussie rules growing in the 1900's when we actually had a comp in Sydney. There used to be bigger crowds at aussie rules games than union and league.

So to stop it, the union boys locked aussie rules out of the grounds.

Imagine how different things might have been.

Supporters of Victorian AFL teams. Let them have a cry (especially Saints fans), it's not the VFL anymore...
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

"There's only one team in Sydney" and "Carey is a w***er", were two of my favourite chants.
One of the very few times over the past 20-odd years that 30,000 people got their acts together and became one voice (others include the appointment of Roosey and last year's GF).

The Victorian clubs and their supporters can get nicked. They can move wherever they bloody-well like, but they can't move here to Sydney.

I think that Tasmania can handle a team, as well as Canberra. That should take the pressure off Victoria and turn it into a truly "national" competition.

I also think that those coaches with the biggest mouths should be the first to put their teams hands up to move. Hope your reading Maltmouth and Sheeds!!

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

quoted from HS article ... Geelong premiership coach Bob Davis said fans had a genuine gripe.

"It's ridiculous the MCG is not used during the finals -- especially for the South Australian and NSW clubs," he said.

"When I played, the bus trip from Geelong took longer than a flight from Sydney or Adelaide these days.

"I mean, after all, it's our game."

                    From the article:
The survey also shows evidence of a siege mentality developing in the birthplace of Australian rules. Almost 88 per cent of fans said they would be more likely to support a Victorian club over an interstate one if their team was not playing in the Grand Final.
I find this one very hard to believe. From my extensive experience of barracking for a Victorian club, I'll tell you that I'd support any non-Victorian club against Collingwood and for anyone at all against Carlton - and unless something dramatic's happened since 2003 that view is hardly unique.

Bob Davis... Melbourne's dial-a-quote version of David Campese.

Under the old system, Sydney would have played Freo on Friday at the MCG. What a joke that would have been.

If Victorian clubs want to be more competitive then they need to stop relying on the draft and invest in better facilities, coaching staff and recruitment.

If they can't afford that then either stop whingeing or merge.

Why not? That chant was a classic. It was sooooooo funny. I couldn't concentrate on the rest of the game (I think we won it from memory, it was ages and ages ago).

I think it just didn't seem right to single one person out & attack on a personal level (not saying he's not a wanker, btw) - & as much as I dislike him, he was a champion player.
