Better to steal premiership glory, than to earn dismal defeat.

    Still shattered.

Blame ticketmaster; I'm sure than nobbled Hall.

Disagree - we didn't deserve to be as close as we were at half time - BUT I was mightily impressed by our resolve in 2nd half.

I was sending a friend in NZ score updates qtr by qtr. Message at halftime was Swans playing crap. At 3 qtr time, it was somehow still in it. Had we won it would have definitely been a steal. Yes we missed gettable goals, but so did they in the 3rd quarter when they could have pushed the lead out to over 5 goals. We were lucky to have a chance of winning the game at 3 qtr time, but credit to our boys, they didn't give up. But West Coast were definitely the better team on the day (just as we were last year). 1-1 is a fair outcome for 2 Grand Finals decided by less than a kick.

        I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

What I find inexcusible is the fact that so many of our "big name" players singularly failed to stand up when they needed to, and this is precisely why we lost.

It's true that getting to a second straight GF is remarkable considering our rather poor start to our premiership this year.

But I hope that our boys can spend the off-season thinking long and hard about how it was all thrown away in the game that really counts.

I was too. However, weighing up the two teams I thought the Eagles deserved it more, even though I think if we had turned up to play we would have won by 5 goals.

I recall you made a similar prediction before the game - something like if we had an off day, the Eagles would win in a close one, but if we had a good day, we would win comfortably.

The Eagles deserved to win, no argument with that whatsoever.

Anyone notice the scoreline, 85-84, apart from being the reverse of the QF score, was the same as the game against Richmond at the MCG in 2005 that we lost by a point? Similar pattern - crap start, brave (but ultimately futile) fightback. Deja vu in more ways than one.

They absolutely deserved to win. I can't believe we got so close, in a game where we had NO BUSINESS getting so close.

So well done West Coast, and best two out of three next year?

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                  Echoing Des' and Mike's comments...

Their midfield was rampant in first half; we gifted them two goals and another 3 came about through ordinary defensive errors. Barry Hall missed two he should be able to kick in his sleep, and Jude should really have kicked one, if not both of his. Pretty damn amazing that we lost by one point!

Still, there is some encouragement to be taken out of the game. I thought all four of the "newbies" equipped themselves well. Doyle was the quietest of the four but was as effective as Seaby - probably better. Malceski did what he's been doing all year, and despite a comment in one of the Melbourne papers, I didn't think he seemed in the least over awed.

McVeigh's job on Cousins was more than creditable, given the dominance of their midfield for the first half. And in the final term he was one of the players that nearly made the difference.

And what do you say about Teddy Richards? He made some mistakes at various points in the game but his efforts in the final term were inspiring. He ran himself to an absolute stand-still, so hard did he work. It took him a while to settle in to the club but if there is ever a case of a player "getting" what his new club is all about, it has to be Ted.

                      Deserved to win?

I disagree! Is this just because they played well in the first half and we played poorly?

Why is it somehow perceived to be "better" or "more deserving" if a team plays well in the first half rather than in the second half?

West Coast kicked 8 goals to our 4 in the first half, and then this was reversed 4- to 8 in the second half.

                      It's a game of 4 quarters!

Not sure I can ever watch the replay, but my feeling all day was that we were being outplayed but somehow staying close enough to make a charge, but even our 'charge' wasn't really the typical type of charge, I spent the last quarter praying that we would fall over the line.

A football loss has never ever hurt me as much as yesterday, actually made me question how or why I got myself so attached to something that can make me hurt so badly!

The early nineties never ever hurt this much, it is more relaxing going for a crap side lol

Can't wait to return to work and get the "I'm so sorry about the Swans" crap out of the way, so I can try and remove it from my memory.

Saw a replay of the last 10 seconds at the aiport tonight...made me feel sick...

My dad reminded me that the Swans have now played in two grand finals in a row with 1 premiership, and the two closest grand finals for decades also. When it dies down, I'll look at all this in the right context, but for now it's not much fun.

One of the great mysteries of all time. If you ever solve it, let me know

I think West Coast were clearly better than us. Completely outplayed us in the first half, and really should have put us away. However, a combination of some dodgy kicking, one or two dodgy decisions and some spectacularly arsey goals meant that we kept in touch, and were ALMOST in a position to capitalise on said luck.

Of course, the "better" team on the day doesn't always win... But IMO they did on this ocassion. That's my whole point really. WCE IMO much better on the day, but we got close due to a bit of G&D, and some luck.

I don't think that either team "deserved" to win the game.

The only thing that each team deserved was a spot in the GF. Nothing else matters, and rightfully so.

At the end of the game, the only team that deserved the premiership was the team that won on the day.

That team being the West Coast Eagles

The fact that we lead for only 3 minutes of the game seems to indicate we weren't good enough on the day. Lets remenber when Goodes kicked that goal in the 1st minute of the last Qtr we had all the momentum but still couldn't get in front. As shattering as the result is, the eagles were the better team on the day.
