I LIKE THE THREE CAPTANS WE HAVE. Goodes will probably also win Swans Best and Fairest tomorrow night - for sure.
    Love those Swans

If he wins the B&F this year, this is how his credentials will then read ....

      Brownlow Medal 2003 (equal), 2006
      Best and fairest 2003
      3rd best and fairest 2002
      All-Australian 2003, 2006
      International Rules Series 2001
      Indigenous Team of the Century
      AFL Rising Star 1999
      Premiership side 2005
      Premiership player 2006
      Best & Fairest 2006 (TBA)
Swans Fan's Choice Player of the Year.

Can you name another player in our current squad who is as decorated as Adam Goodes??

Do not even bring up the bull@@@@ argument that "individual" accomplishments do not mean anything ... the bloody brownlow is awarded to the best and fairest individual player in the competition (or in a three-way tie ... the three best & fairests).

Based on the above accomplishments, alone, he should be made captain.

Would we be the only team in the history of the AFL not to make our Dual Brownlow medalist the captain?? If so, I'd hate to be the laughing stock of the competition.

      Cheers

I'm with you right up to there Annie! He's a wonderful player. But that doesn't make him the best leader. Some players thrive as captains, some don't. I want him to have nothing to worry about apart from getting that damn ball!

Goodesy to me seems like a player who would thrive with the added "pressure" of the captaincy.

Whereas Kirky does what he does best by throwing himself into packs, Goodsey would just run further and faster.

Goodsey is inspirational as it is, imagine how he'll go when he feels like he HAS to lead by example.

            Thanks Mike.

Goodsey has a fine head on his shoulders. I think he'd make a better leader than Stuart Maxwell did. (Don't go jumping down my throat people ... I loved Max, but I didn't think he was quite leadership material ... not outspoken enough.).

Goodsey is super-talented. I don't think enough of you realise what an honour it is to be watching this guy play .... today. In years to come, we'll look back and say "wow". Adam has matured greatly in the last few years (since winning his first brownlow) and now, IMO he'd be a natural shoe-in for the job of captain. For Christ's sake ... the man has TWO brownlow medals. From memory, I believe Paul Kelly only has one (please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.).

I think if he had the captaincy, he'd be hungrier for the ball.

How few threads about rubbish would we have on here if Saturday went 2 points the other way.

In fact, it would be all excited sensible stuff, but for 2 points, our captaincy system is untennable, our coach is average too etc

I like evolution and progress as much as the next person, but we were capable of taking that Flag, we are at the forefront of footy, 14 other teams want to be us.

Doesn't leave us much to whinge about for the next six months! But I'm with you. We've blamed every man and his baby for getting within a single bloody point!

The only thing that cost us the premiership was lack of hunger in the first half.

Win or lose a grand final, finish as finals stocking fillers, or finish at the bottom of the ladder ... this time of the year is all about re-focussing on next year. From the AFL commission, all the way down to us lowly fans, we all ask the question, "what can we do to make next year bigger, better and brighter". That's football.

I believe this time last year I was discussing (elsewhere) how we were going to replace Bally, and whether or not the swans had the balls to go back to back.

Players and coaches at the club say that all Stuart did was take a club of perennial losers and introduce a code of self belief and team self management that so far has given us one Premiership and a very good run at another one. What he achieved as captain was more than any Swans captain has achieved since 1933.

Obviously that was done with Roos and the rest of the players. But if you don't think that the Swans think that last year's Premiership was Stewie's then you weren't around at the celebration dinners last year. It was no coincidence that no captain was appointed in 2005 after Stuart stepped down.

And he had the grace to stand aside when he thought his inclusion would not help the team - even when his coach was saying that he'd be included if he indicated he was ready to go. Is that the ultimate clubman?

Back on the original topic: the best player is not the best captain (or Spida would have led the Horks in 2005?). I think Adam will be an inspirational leader - just listen to his Brownlow speech again - but right now, if we went to a single captain, it'd be Kirk. As several players have said, Kirk is the spiritual continuation of Stewie and Kel.

I had spiritual inspriation at the GF ... Johnnie Black (God bless him!!).

The best captain is sometimes not the best player. I'd prefer a captain who was the best player. Lead by example, inspire, etc. etc.

If I want a spiritual leader to lead my football team, I'd check out one of the churches and pray to one of the gods.

If I want an inspriational leader to lead my football team by example, I'd pick the dual brownlow medalist. Mmmmmmm, best and fairest ..... twice!!

                          Most certainly ...

                          Player Honours
                          Player honours: Brownlow Medal 1997, 1998; best and fairest 1992, 1994, 1997, 1998; 2nd best and fairest 2000, 2003; 3rd best and fairest 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999; All-Australian 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003; International Rules Series 1998; EJ Whitten Medal 1992, 1993, 1996; AFLPA MVP 1997; Michael Tuck Medal 2004; pre-season premiership sides 1996, 2004; captain 2001-02.

We would be the only team NOT to put our brownlow medalist in as Captain ... the DUAL brownlow medalist no less!!

                          Outrageous!!!
