Mike Sheahans's End of Year Top 50

Mike Sheahan has updated his top 50 players in the AFL source

    Sydney players listed are:

    2. Adam Goodes
    4. Barry Hall
    17. Ryan O'Keefe
    21. Craig Bolton
    34. Brett Kirk

Sheahan really likes Craig Bolton and had him in his top 50 last year as well.

Overall a fair assessment. West Coast have the most with 7 players listed and the Kangaroo's had none.

    Cheers

But the Brownlow Medallist is in Number 2? So technically Mike ranked someone better than the man deemed to be the best in the league this year...

I love Goodsey as much as the next bloke but Judd is No.1

Put Kerr, Cousins, Cox and co in the Swans team and does Goodes still poll 26 votes?

It's only judged by the umpires. The players picked Judd by a mile.

Plus Judd missed four weeks mid season

Maybe Hude Bolton could consider himself a tad unlucky....

But it's a pretty reasonble list of our top players...

Nor did any of the eagle players.

How does a bloke who won the Coleman medal whilst playing for the wooden spooners with the least amount of "points for" kicked (bar the Roos), not rank above Barry Hall?

because if you were picking teams in the school yard and you had first pick, who would you want - Barry or Fev? Simple really, bazza is a better player and more of an asset to a team then Fevola...Fev is a better full forward.

Yes, but if he is purely picking his top 50 from this year's performances, then he is wrong. We kicked 100 more goals than Carlton - yep that's right, 600 more points and Hall took 80 more marks than Fev. But Fev kicked 84 goals to Hall's 78 to take out the Coleman medal. To me, that is an outstanding effort, and I can't recall the last time a player won a Coleman medal when their team finished stone cold last. It may have happend when the competition only had 8 teams or something ridiculous......

                      How does this occur??

                      Easy....

Despite how terrible Carlton was/is/will be, they are still going to kick the occassional goal. Whilst most teams will score at least 200 goals for the season, and Carlton will score about 100, it's not unreasonable to expect their ONLY avanue goal to kick 80% of them. Hence, you have a Coleman medalist in the lowest ranked team.

So by your reckoning, the Coleman medallist will come from the wooden spooner on most occasions, right? Can't ignore the facts. Hall took 80 more marks, and mainly in the forward 50. He had more opprtunity die to more forward 50 entries and came 2nd to Fevola. You can't deny that Fevola had an outstanding season considering the limited opportunities and the crap disposal into the forward 50. I don't like the fella, but he was brilliant this year.

No doubt he had a good season. And no the coleman medalist won't always come from a bottom team.

But he is the FF and is Carlton's ONLY avenue to goal. Therefore, everytime they go forward, they are looking for him. Whereas our boy Barry is CHF has Micky O, Davis, Schneiderman, ROK plus a couple of midfielders contributing to the cause regularly. Fev does not.

As for marks, I think you would find a lot more of halls marks were taken up the ground on the wing. Throw in the fact that Hall regularly dishes off ones that he should take a shot at (IMHO), and Fev knowing he has no other options, and you get a higher goal kicker in a lower ranked team.

Yes, i think the obvious thing is that Bhall plays CHF. So it isnt a comparison. He also has more of an influence on the team. When he plays well, the swans will more likely win. When he doesnt... well, the GF wasnt that long ago...

Unlike Fev, who when he plays well, the blues still lose..

Not saying this to bag either player, as there are various reasons for both...
