We had a good draw...but you certainly couldn't say that in Round 1 2006....The point these afore mentioned wankers were making was the Swans get looked after by the AFL in terms of salary cap, 'development' funds and the draw, year in, year out.

Draw announcement was due tomorrow - this has been delayed though.

We play Collingwood twice, thanks to a change in how the last 7 rounds are set out.

The teams you play form the first 7 rounds will no longer be the teams you play in the last 7 rounds, you can basically play any 7 sides from week 1 to 15 twice now.

13 games in NSW/ACT. I'd guess 6 in Melbourne, 1 Perth, 1 Adelaide and 1 Brisbane.

Here's one for you....

Have the AFL finally woken up to themselves and are going to leave the draw "flexible" so they can telecast the best games???? i.e. Like the NRL wisely do.

For those not aware of how it works, the NRL draw works like this:

1. Draw is announced about 2mths before season kick off.
2. Each team polays each other twice, one home, one away (Wish we did this).
3. Each team knows what team they will be playing on a particular weekens and where they will be playing - but not when.
4. The actual timing for the game is not decided until 2 weeks prior to the game. i.e. Friday nights, Saturday, Sunday, etc.

This ensures that they always get a "blockbuster" game to televise on Friday and Sunday. Unlike the AFL who end up with a farsical Friday night game between Essendon and PtAdelaide on Friday night because that's the way the draw came out. In the NRL system, this game would have ended up on Saturday Afternoon and the game between two contending teams that actually mattered would have been played on Friday.

I understand channel 9 took an absolute belting in the ratings over these crap Friday night games.

Based on the article referred to earlier I would say not, given St Kilda are to be allocated 7 Friday night games.

Rightly or wrongly, the AFL tries to share around Friday night games although Sydney and Brisbane are usually the only teams to miss out.

Are we going to finally get some Friday night games now that Channel 9 has lost the rights???

It's the one thing I hate about being a Sydney supporter. No Friday night games. Nothing better than finishing the week up at the office, pub crawling all the way from the CBD up to the SCG to plant your @ss on a seat bang on 7:30pm for the tap. Few refreshing bevvies through the course of the game, a pie for dinner.....

And depending on the result... A few beers on the way home, or straight home for a whinge about how we were robbed again by the umpires..

I think it was fairly obvious as soon as the draw was released that we had an easy draw - one trip to Perth and Adelaide, the Crows once at home, Saints once at home... both top 4 teams from the year before.
We just wasted the good draw by losing too many matches at home.

Can't understand why they don't adopt this strategy. It's madness. By doing so, the NRL has increased it's popularity no end by making sure that only the high quality games make the screen.

Concur... Blew our chance of top two all by ourselves.... we won more away than we did at home?? Anyone confirm?? Sounds about right... Certainly wasn't a good year to attend all home games.. Though the trip to Melbourne to see the Richmond game was well worth it..

The AFL system is not changing, you can just play a side twice that you played after round 7, this hasn't happened in the recent past. AFL doesn't need to wake up, I hate the NRL system.

In 2005, my friend (a Wests Tigers supporter) and I went down a Swans/Tigers double to Melbourne. We booked 6 months in advance to get cheaps flights, we wanted to come back to Sydney midday Sunday, but had to come back Sunday night as we had no idea when the Storm/Tigers match would be. Ended up being 30 minutes after the Hawks/Swans on the Sunday, so we could have left when we had wanted to in the first place but had no way to plan that at time of booking.

The AFL doesn't need flexible rostering like that, it makes no sense. The NRL need it because they only sell a small amount of games to FTA.

There could be some scope for this, however, I would think that the biggest negative here is related to the travel aspect. Travelling between Sydney and Brisbane (and a one off to NZ)pales against having to travel Sydney-Perth-Sydney- Adelaide-Sydney-Melbourne, and allowing sufficient breaks between games.

To be fair on the players, NRL 30 games x 80 mins as against AFL 22 games x 110 mins (approx) is a surprisingly similar amount of game time.

The point is the flexibility to show the best games possible in th ehighest rating time slots. And if it is 6 weeks in advance like you said, plenbty of time for cheaper flights (4weeks).
