Late draft picks: Chad Gibson and Alan Obst

Two KPP prospects are now available once again. The Clones have sprung a real surprise by delisting 2004 draftee Chad Gibson and 2005 draftee Alan Obst.

Gibson is 195cm, 93kg, turning 20 in January, taken at pick 28, perpetually described as a 'pack-crasher' with a huge potential. Very frequently injured over the last 2 years; in 2006 managed 6 league and 6 reserves SANFL games. This profile indicates that he was always anticipated to take a while, so we can only guess that the Clones have got scared as a result of his injuries.

Obst was pick 48 for the Clones last year, is 192cm and 82kg, and just 19 yoa. Played 7 games of league for Central Districts this year and seemingly got through the year uninjured. The Clones' reasons for delisting referred to "assessments from the match committee", obviously indicating they're disappointed with his progress in 2006. But honestly, it's only one year from a 19 yo; hard to imagine that he's identified as having potential in 2005 and 12 months later it's gone.

Whatever happened to that Collective Bargaining Agreement condition that draftees have to be given 2 years? Can clubs get around it by delisting the player and just paying them the 2nd year's salary? Fun trivia fact about Alan Obst: Robbie Ando predicted that he would be our first draft pick in 2005. As it turned out, he was taken just 3 picks before we got into the draft. Could 2006 be his year?

Both are well worth considering with pick 49 and/or 65. At a minimum, in my view, we would be mad not to rookie 'em if we have spots on the rookie list and they're still available at that point.

Chad Gibson would be a good pick up. He looks good and will provide some value to us. Not sure about Obst, will need to put on a bit of muscle I reckon, but Gibson will be a handy addition.

If I were sydney I wouldnt waste my time with Chad Gibson he is no more than an amature league player, not good enough for sanfl and will just be a wash up in the reserves, and if ya wanna no how i no this is because ive played with him through all of his juniors career. his body will not cope with afl

Are you basing your assessments from the time you played junior footy with this guy? I would guess that a few years have passed and some muscle and height have been added to his frame that would be able to cope with AFL today. He sounds like he's in good shape, but you're only providing information that is, what, say 4 or 5 years old?

Of course it was obvious back from the days that you were playing with him, that he would only ever be an amateur standard player, not good enough for SANFL. That's how he became part of the less than 1% of young players each year who are drafted, obviously.

As for not being able to cut it at SANFL league level: you do realise that this stuff is actually archived in the big machine that is the interweb, don't you? If he's not redrafted, I'll look forward to going back to this bold prediction in a few years' time.

Mind you, the Swans have a reputation for turning round young players, who were considered crap at other clubs.

Teddy Richards: A slap in the face to Sheedy.
Craig Bolton: A slap in the face to Matthews.

Where is the next one? That's the $64,000 question.

Is this just sour grapes that he got his chance at AFL and you didnt.?

Now the Bombers have got into the 'dumping 2005 draftees' act by delisting KPP prospect Austin Lucy. 193cm, 90kg defender, from Queensland. All Australian U/18 player in 2005. Only just turned 19. Slipped to #66 in the 2005 draft after it was projected he could have gone much higher. (So it's true that we've already overlooked him once.)

Bombers stated no reason for dumping him. Either they've seen something that has surprised and horrified them in the 10 months he's been there (hard to know what it could be), they're short on players to dump (gee, you wouldn't have thought so), or they have bought into the whole 'superdraft' nonsense hype.

Lucy got a regular game for the Bendigo Bombers firsts in the VFL this year, and did okay for the stage in his development he's at. Again, would seem to be a more likely prospect than (ahem) some of our existing KPP rookies, if he's still available come rookie draft time.

Don't bother, and be expected to receive mock laughter and ridicule from some who think that mentioning Essendon players is an act of madness. Now where was Ted Richards from again???...........
