Two KPP prospects are now available once again. The Clones have sprung a real surprise by delisting 2004 draftee Chad Gibson and 2005 draftee Alan Obst.
Gibson is 195cm, 93kg, turning 20 in January, taken at pick 28, perpetually described as a 'pack-crasher' with a huge potential. Very frequently injured over the last 2 years; in 2006 managed 6 league and 6 reserves SANFL games. This profile indicates that he was always anticipated to take a while, so we can only guess that the Clones have got scared as a result of his injuries.
Obst was pick 48 for the Clones last year, is 192cm and 82kg, and just 19 yoa. Played 7 games of league for Central Districts this year and seemingly got through the year uninjured. The Clones' reasons for delisting referred to "assessments from the match committee", obviously indicating they're disappointed with his progress in 2006. But honestly, it's only one year from a 19 yo; hard to imagine that he's identified as having potential in 2005 and 12 months later it's gone.
Whatever happened to that Collective Bargaining Agreement condition that draftees have to be given 2 years? Can clubs get around it by delisting the player and just paying them the 2nd year's salary? Fun trivia fact about Alan Obst: Robbie Ando predicted that he would be our first draft pick in 2005. As it turned out, he was taken just 3 picks before we got into the draft. Could 2006 be his year?
Both are well worth considering with pick 49 and/or 65. At a minimum, in my view, we would be mad not to rookie 'em if we have spots on the rookie list and they're still available at that point.
