I always get surprised when Swans fans decide they are really South Melbourne supporters, or Sydney supporters alone. And even more shocked when I see the two sides start lining up as in this thread to duke it out. Total self-defeating stuff.
We all know that the best thing to come out of Melbourne is the Hume, followed closely by the Swans.

Fair enough. Truth is I remembered the quote from the film JFK. But somehow I knew it was older than that. Anyhoo....

I actually chose not to go to Nirvana because it was too cold. (canberra winter, u18, therefore would have been outside anyway)

What I find amazing is the number of Victorian based fans, not just on RWO, but everywhere, who almost instantly when the opportunity arises, will tell you that they, mum, dad, brothers, sisters, all their neighbours, etc etc would be at EVERY game at the LSO when South played.
Are you still bitter about the trip from Sunbury

What did the whole Dr J family have to set out on the wagon late Friday afternoon to make it to LSO by Sat afternoon, back in the old days?

                          Get back late Sunday night?

SCG is probably closer to Sunbury than the LSO

The club was so poorly run in the years preceding the transfer I wonder if we had double the attendances whether it would have made any difference.

                              Spot on.

It wasn't the crowds or lack thereof (but it should still be remembered that we did have one of the lowest supporter bases going around in anycase and at the time many of the older supporters were starting to die off) that forced the move. What really forced the move was the fact we couldn't cope with the increase of transfer fees, player wages and the fact we had to pay more to keep the Lake Oval in a fit state to stay open (and even then it was falling apart) at the time and couldn't get enough sponsorship to cover costs like other clubs could (Just Jeans put $100,000 on the table at one stage but that bearly covered our debts let alone our costs).

That was mainly due to the fact we had only made the finals twice since 1945 (70 and 77), so companies tended to look towards the likes of Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn, Richmond and at the time North Melbourne. Also take into account the VFL's campaign to get us to Sydney and regardless of what our crowd levels were we were always going to end up in Sydney after the 1981 season.

But don't let fact spoil a nice rant
                              Once was, now elsewhere

Nah Reggi back in those days we lived in the property stewards cupboard, under the stand at the LSO. Thats why I was the first to sign the "save our grandstand" petition. Its my old house.

On match day, Dad worked on the turnstiles and sold raffle tickets whilst Mum busily worked the donut van outside. My younger brothers used to direct cars into the car parks, and my sisters were scoreboard attendants. I used to have to get the drinks for the guys in the press box. Geez that Tommy Lahiff could drink. On Sundays Mum would wash all the players jumpers, firsts, reserves and U19's and entertain the players wives and girlfriends whilst the players were at the pleasant Sunday morning, that my Dad was cooking the barbie for.

Can't get more commitment to the cause than that. The whole family voted for them to go to Sydney, cause the club said we could still live under the stand, and not have to do all the work we were doing. Good deal I reckon. Self interest rules!!
