Well said RL, I would have been more than happy if Roosy said that.

I am not angry at Roosy as per say and everyone reacts to a heartbreaking defeat differently, but did Roosy's comments really reflect how the team felt, or were they just his opinions?

IMO his post match comments should have reflected more appropriately the tears of Goodesy, Hall and others who had run themselves into the ground trying to win a flag, not the ying and yang that he was going on about post match and again in yesterday's Sydney magazine.

For a guy who has only 1 flag after playing or coaching 500 plus games I find it puzzling that he can be so flippant about missing a golden chance to secure another.

Having said that I think he's a great coach, and I'll pass comment on what game plan he should implement in07 in another thread.

Give Roosey a break, he would have only had a short time to "prepare" something to say.

I was more than ok with what Roosey said post-GF six months ago - if you care to look back to the post-GF discussions.

ROKL was disappointed at ground zero, and still has a problem with it today.

RL has taken it on himself to be the media watch dog for roosey. Anything Roosey says you can guarantee ROk with scrutinise the next day.

Roosy didn't lose the GF, the players did and they knew it.
Roos' attempt to play the loss down at the time is understable
and possibly an attempt to console his team.

He will do me as a coach.

That's pretty much what I thought at the time. I also typed it out in one straight hit. No editing, no refinement. Certainly no preparation.

I am saying that I would have liked him to acknowledge that mistakes were made that potentially cost the flag, rather than it was all in the lap of the gods type crap. I ma not sure why it is a crime to disagree with Roos and to be critical of things he does. I find it interesting that so many mould their own opinions to those of his, as though he is some guru. Paul says it is ok to blow the flag, then it is ok to blow the flag, Paul says it is ok to let the leadership group select the team, it is ok to let the leadership group select the team, etc etc. It's bollocks. Paul Roos is a good coach but not faultless - unless you listen to him.

You seem to be confusing a professional analysis of the game, as part of the preparation for a successful 2007 campaign, with public statements made immediately after an emotionally wrenching defeat. Saying, 'In some respects we were outplayed and mistakes were made', is just stating the bleeding obvious. In some respects we were outplayed and mistakes were made in 2005 as well. The fact that he presented a 'ah well, devastating for the blokes, but that's life' persona on the evening of 30 September 2006, doesn't mean that:
a) he hadn't busted a gut doing absolutely everything to have the team performing at its fullest ability before and on the day
b) he thinks that there is nothing to learn by doing a detailed review of how we lost it.

A recurrent theme with Roos (and most coaches who deal with the media professionally: read 'not Malthouse or Laidley') is that there doesn't need to be any great relationship between your (in-house) coaching persona and your media presence. As Sir Joh said, press conferences are 'feeding the chooks'; Roos will ultimately be judged as a coach on the team's performances, not on words he says in post-match press conferences. Which is as it should be. He could have brought his Opus Dei whips into the post-GF press conference and started flagellating himself: still wouldn't have changed the fact that we lost by a point.

Yeah, sure, he's not perfect. And sure, many fans take a 'they are the professionals, we trust them to do things professionally' approach, rather than a more micro-managing critical approach. Both are valid perspectives, depending on how crazy about footy you are.

But to revert to a 'why is it a crime to have a different opinion?' complaint, to me just smacks of someone who's losing the argument. It's not a crime: it's just that some opinions are more believable than others.
