AFL Betting Probe - First Two Players Named

Simon Goodwin of Adelaide and Daniel Ward of Melbourne have been named as 2 of the 4 AFL players that are being investigated for betting on AFL matches and/or events.

Goodwin has fessed up to placing bets on matches not involving the Crows and Ward involvment isn't known but a few year back had to seek out help from the Demons to help pay off Gambling debts involving horse racing to a well known Melbourne bookmaker.

2 other players are yet to be named but seeing as the first two have, its only a matter of time before they are named.

If found guilty the player involved can be fined up to $100,000 and receive an indefinite ban from playing and attending AFL matches (ie. what amounts to a Pete Rose - like Life Ban from Baseball, where he was banned from baseball for life but could be re-admitted at anytime at the commissioners choosing).

I didn't know anything like this was even going on until I heard a Fox Sports news update late last night which named Goodwin, Ward, Kangaroos' ruckman David Hale and our own Kieren Jack as the four.
Miles Baron-Hay doesn't seem to be overly worried yet, but I'm sure its a lesson the young bloke will learn in a hurry.
    Here's the confirmation.

    Players named in betting probe

Baron-Hay added: "Kieren has confirmed that in 2006 he placed two bets, totalling no more than $10."
"The club wishes to make it very clear that these bets were not placed on Swans games. Kieren acknowledges and accepts that in doing so he breached AFL rules. He accepts that it was an error of judgment and apologises."

"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

According to whom? I'm guessing you're gonna say it was a rumour on SEN this morning.

Ridiculous if it came to that, and highly unlikely IMO. Only reason that bans like that could be justified is if players are found to be betting against their own team. Ward may cop a bit for betting on Melbourne games - though it was reported that he at least bet on them to win.

Heard this morning on SEN that Goodwins was a very serious matter the worst of the lot,but ROK said this morning he thought it was ok to bet on other teams but not the Swans. So it seems the message isnt getting through.

Goodwin supposedly bet on West Coast to win the premiership. The seriousness of that pivots on whether he placed the bet before the Toasters beat Adelaide in the PF or after. For his sake you'd want to hope it was after... - and that was what was originally reported.

They are footballers afterall. So it will probably take a while for the message to penetrate......

ADELAIDE midfielder Simon Goodwin has been fined $40,000 for placing four bets totalling more than $16,000 on AFL matches.
Blackjack should only be fined $25...
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore
