Brett Kirk: "All Australian" or "former All Australian"?

Is Brett Kirk (or any other AA player from previous years) an All Australian or a former All Australian? Is it a title you can use forever or only for a year?

Is Chris Judd a Brownlow medallist, or a former Brownlow medallist?

You get to keep the medal but you don't get to stay in the team. Are the Swans still Premiers?

I think you'll find the All Australians get medals too - pretty certain they don't have to give them back at the end of the year either.

Swans are, and will forever remain, the 2005 Premiers.

Is Warwick Capper a Sydney Swan or former Sydney Swan? You can't use the title if you're not on the team. Brett Kirk is no longer on the All Australian team, therefore he isn't an All Australian any more than Capper is a Sydney Swan.

IMO they are AA for the year until the next team is announced, in the same way you are premiers until the next GF has been decided.

              It depends on the context.

Usually you would refer to Kirk as an All Australian, or Kirk, who won all Australian honours in 2005.

It would also be correct to say that the Swans have 7 all Australians in their line-up - you don't say 4 All Australians and 3 former All Australians

Just as you would say Jason Akermanis is a premiership player even though he's playing in a team which hasn't won a premiership in 50 years. He's not a former premiership player even though he is a former Lion.
"As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

i think the person gets to keep the title **** (whatever year they were) All Australian
eg. Ryan O'Keefe 2006 All Australian

                  alison's suggestion is good.

It would be very strange to simply refer to Jonathan Hay as "the Kangaroos' All Australian fullback".

Or as CH 7 suggested this evening on the news - Jonathan Hay, former Kangaroos former All-Australian fullback.
And the man who started it all, the Schneiderman . . . . .

for a second there i thought the swear filter had been activated. no matter what indelicate four-letter word i thought of, it seemed to suggest you didn't think much of all-australian honours.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Two time All-Australian, not former two time All Australian.

Once you've won an All Australian spot, you're an All Australian, forever. Even when past champions are being introduced, it's "three time All Australian" or "dual Brownlow medalist" you rarely hear them described as former anything, unless it's "former Richmond coach" or "ex-Sydney player" etc.
