As soon as I saw this article in today's paper, I immediately gathered someone asked Leo a question and he gave a generalised answer, then it was turned around as if he made the statement. Happens all the time and must be extremely frustrating for anyone in the spotlight. Rubbish journalism.

I have read one direct quote on this from Leo. If he said anything more, I am surprised that it has not been quoted too. From the quote that has been published, it is clear that someone has twisted it to come up with a sensationalist headline that doesn't reflect what Leo said.
So how exactly is he backpedalling?
There is a middle ground between a) "idolising" anyone to ever pull on the RWO, assuming they are all angels who would never transgress, and believing them above all criticism; and b)this practice, by a few, to grasp with both hands any possible opportunity to sneer at any comment made to the media, regardless of whether or not it is taken out of context.

Still, I didn't see any media article saying that Barry said it was "rife in the AFL".
