When I first saw the headline I thought Lethal was heading down the same senile road as Kevin Sheedy, but he actually makes a lot of sense:
Scrap interchange: Lethal

Back in the 1970s there were 20 men, with two on the bench, and once someone came off they couldn't come back on. Prior to then there were only 19 players.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I wonder if he had depth in his list if he'd be spouting the same @@@@.
If you dropped it to 2 players unlimited interchange I think it'd achieve the same. The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

One of the most stupid things Matthews has ever come up with. He's returned to his childhood by the look of it. There is a major problem with his thinking today......what happens when a player goes off for the "blood rule"? Is he off "for good", or do we have to wait 5 minutes until he is patched up and able to return to the field?Comment

I thought this was the most stupid part of his thinking...IIRC it was because of the impact injuries were having on games that the interchange bench was introduced, and then expanded.Matthews floated his radical proposal yesterday to eliminate the impact injuries have on the results of games.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

Yeah that Leigh Matthews knows nothing about footy...
I don't recall the interchange being introduced because of injuries. A bigger interchange creates more potential for injuries as it makes the game faster.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I simply don't understand that logic. What do we want as spectators? Do we want to see 18 physically exhausted - make that 36 individuals who by some stage in the 3rd quarter are that knackered that their skill level will resemble an U10's match? Games are played all around the country, in temperatures of 25+, and we don't want players being interchanged?
You're suggesting that no interchange will make the game quicker. How? Players will have a tendency to slow the game up as they get more fatigued, and there will be more potential for a player to make mistakes when they are fatigued, and possibly get an injury because of fatigue.
Leigh Matthews has lost his marbles on this one.Comment

Yeah, my bad.
But no interchange also increases the potential for injuries...
As the game gets quicker, there will be a need for more on the bench. That's what it's all about. The game gets more exciting for the public. Watch a tape of a game in the 80's and compare it to today. The quality is much better today.Comment

I don't need to watch a tape. I remember what football was like in the 1970s and 1980s, and there is a lot to argue that it was better then. More long kicking, more high marking, and more goals. Now there is more sideways kicking and keepings-off, play the possession game, less goals, more tackles and ball ups, less high marking.
One of the reasons the game is now so quick is that players can rotate off the bench. Increased speed means more injuries.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

At the risk of saying "When I was a boy..." I agree with you bloods. Whilst the game is "cleaner" than in the 70's/80's (Lethal Leigh would have only played half the games he did if he tried today what he did back then), the spectacle of the game was much better back then IMO.I don't need to watch a tape.
