I don't understand sledging at all - I think it's weak and pathetic. But I can understand how people can come out with things, especially in the heat of a game, which they would not normally say.
I dont think its weak or pathetic NMW,IMO its weak if the opposition fall for it.You must do what you have to to win if that player is far better than you,you have to do some thing to beat him.

I disagree. If Selwood realised his mistake he should have just said a simple "sorry mate" and got on with the game. That's hardly delivering a phsychological edge to anyone. What is more important, IMO, is that Selwood should have realised that the tattoo was a) a child and b) used whatever common sense he has to realise that it's probably Headland's child. In other words he should never have said anything in the first place.

Maybe they should just stop the game everytime there's a sledge or a bit of a rough up and make the culprit apologise over the big screen.

I am finding it hard correlating your statements on this issue, Swantastic, with your signature.

Selwood claimed sexual relations with a 6 yr old, when would you like the drawing and quartering?

I really doubt you'd see a footballer back down after attempting a sledge. As I said, I would have thought he'd say nothing more and then apologise after the game.

What is more important, IMO, is that Selwood should have realised that the tattoo was a) a child and b) used whatever common sense he has to realise that it's probably Headland's child. In other words he should never have said anything in the first place.
We don't know how he viewed the tattoo - it's not really that clear that it's a child and maybe he didn't see it as such. We'll find out.

I don't see the need for sledging - should just be about the game. They don't do it in golf and other sports. Sledging in social sports is particularly pathetic.

Is it weak and pathetic that Headland was protecting and sticking up for his daughter? Does that make YOU weak and pathetic for loving YOUR children?

In my experience it has been OK about 95% of the time. Sledging takes many forms. It can be witty, funny, insulting, sarcastic, intimidating and distracting. There is nothing wrong with that. It's the other 5% that is reprehensible such as the alleged comments in this thread. That is the part that is pathetic and unacceptable.

Mediation has been used before in the AFL and if I recall that's what Spida and Michael Long went through after Spida "racially taunted" him back in 1997, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know if it'll happen this time around considering that Headland is strongly standing by his claims and the lawyers are out to defend Selwood who has strongly denied what Headland claims. If they sat on opposite ends of the table, I wouldn't be surprised if Selwood made some stupid remark and Headland leaps across the table to choke or beat the crap out of him.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

After meeting the Collingwood guys on the Central Coast and the feedback from the coaches clinic, they are SUPERIOR to many teams in the comp. Never thought I'd say that. Dale Thomas was great with my son at the Auskick clinic.
