Essendon greats are outraged that the AFL granted West Coast salary-cap concessions while Cousins underwent a $60,000 drug rehabilitation program, but rejected Essendon's bid for concessions to cover Ramanauskas's bills for cancer treatment.

"Rama finds himself in a tough predicament through no fault of his and needs help," he said.

"The other bloke has made a decision and gone down a path that involves illicit drugs and he gets the help. It's not fair."

I am certainly no Essendon fan, but this goes beyond that. It is just wrong that Essendon is not allowed an exemption for his cancer treatment. Unethical, hypocritical and just plain stupid. It really sums up the AFL under the Fat Controller and Anderson...pathetic.

The walls need to be torn down at AFL House and a big bloody broom brought in to sweep out the @@@@. This is totally unacceptable. I suspect those within the AFL have sympathy for Cousins because they have experienced what he's gone through but they haven't experienced Rama's condition.

I know what cancer does to people,my mum died from it and IMO the AFL are a bloody disgrace.All the other 14 clubs should get behind Essendon and go the AFL hard take them to court what ever it takes so they reverse the decision for wet toast or at least reimburse Essendon.

I think most people arguing "for" WCE getting the relief were doing so on the basis that any reasonable medical expenses would qualify for such relief. It is clearly daft that a "no fault" non-football related illness doesn't qualify when one that includes some element of culpability on part of the patient does.

Did someone at the AFL seriously mess-up and not realise that Essendon's request was rejected?

The salary cap concessions were given to WCE to accomodate the increasing costs of living in Perth. Sydney gets the same for the exact same reasons. i.e. A house here cost $700k as opposed to what it costs in Melbourne/Adelaide/Brisbane. Believe it or not, Perth is the same.

The concessions have nothing to do with player treatments for injuries/afflictions.

How teams and their players treat and pay for the injuries and rehabilitation has nothing to do with the salary cap. Just another case of Essendon crying poor....

I don't think so.

It's a case of 2 clubs asking for help with a non football related "illness", and one gets a Yes, for a self inflicted "illness", while the other gets a No, due to an illness that a player has absolutely, no control over.

Now the AFL has set a precedent, any club applying for the same thing should be given a YES.
