    Free McVeigh

I think it's time Roos seriously thought about allowing Mcveigh to have more of an attacking midfielder role.
There was a time when everyone was itching to see what McVeigh was capable of. But at that time, we had a midfield very difficult to break into with the likes of Williams, Maxfield, Bolton, Kirk, and thus when given an opportunity, it was always a tagging run with role, and for some reason still is.

Whether it's because Roos still believes he needs to work on being accountable, or he just wants to make everyone a clone of Brett 'Mr Lockdown' Kirk, I'm not sure, but he sure as hell hasn't given the kid a chance to show us what he's capable of with a little bit of freedom.

It's interesting that when Roos took over I seem to recall he focussed on making sure the guys enjoyed playing their football. I don't see that fitting in enormously well with making everyone a tagger. Surely allowing players to come in and focus on trying to get a kick would be more in keeping with that attitude.

Yeah, I agree it a weird one isn't it.
I think he meant to say, I want everyone to go out and have fun, enjoy their footy. I won't drag players for making a mistake, I'll let them play their own game, and let them be individuals..........
as long as they play exactly how I tell them to. ie. Lock down footy, focus on your man at all times, Don't let your man get a kick. I don't care if you don't get a kick, as long as your man doesn't get a kick.

          Maybe that's McVeighs problem.
He's feeling a bit down.... he's having leather withdrawl syptoms!

Maybe give McVeigh a decent run in the midfield and let Kirk play the tagger role. They have similarities in that their kicking skills are not great. It is my opinion that Kirk is a slow decision maker whist McVeigh,on the other hand, may be a bit quick.
I do think McVeigh deserves a chance at least.

I'm struggling to see in McVeigh (this year) ability to do anything well. He is not clean at the ball, cannot kick straight, is devoid of in & under capacity, does not get in receiving positions that amount to much, is no line breaker. Perhaps tagging was all that was left...but he is not great at that either. Seems to me he has decided that it doesn't take much to keep getting a game e.g. Bolton, & there is no premium on high level skills (too many to list)...so why bother. IMO a total passenger at the moment.

Surely you jest my friend for the Captain has fed the ball out of the most conjested packs at the blink of an eye. Brilliant slight of hand on occasion.

Macca is still learning the craft and what better way than to play on the best ball winners in the game. Once he embraces these lessons, then maybe he will be ready grasshopper.

In all seriousness, Kirk was a stopper who graduated. Macca is yet to pass his final exams. Letting him do whatever he wants in the midfield would be unfair to him. We're Sydney, not Richmond.

Glad you came in on that Hood. Kirk used to be a tagger. He also used to be a player that no other team would want. How can you equate his game breaking last quarter in the Grand Final last year with being merely a shutdown tagger. There have been a couple of times this season when Kirk's ability to get the ball out of congestion has amazed me.

He used to merely close space for the opposition. In recent years he's been able to create it for himself.

Well if Bevo is due to come in this weekend and will play alongside Jack (ie not replace him) and Monty comes in too, something has to give. Moore's head is probably first on the chopping block but after that it surely has to be between Schmidt and McVeigh. I don't think Schmidt deserves to go, though team selection conventions suggest he might, but maybe it will be McVeigh who makes way instead.

Takes pressure off Bevan if he is only replacing McVeigh too....

That is a good swap for mine. Moore(y) hasn't shown too much with his chances so far.

considering McVeigh's experience compared to Schmidt, it would be preferable to keep Schmidt. Knowing the history of selection however, this seems unlikely.
