Do Sydney travel further?
11 games away from Sydney
2 in Canberra (minimal travel)
6 in Melbourne (1 hr flight)
1 in Adelaide (2 hr flight)
1 in Brisbane (1 hr flight)
1 in Perth (4 hr flight)
13 hours flying
West Coast/Fremantle
8 games away Subi
1 in Adelaide (2 hr flight)
1 in Brisbane (5 hr flight)
1 in Sydney (4 hr flight)
5 in Melbourne (4 hr flight)
31 hours flying
I don't think the travelling from Melb to Syd and vice versa is really a major issue.
Collingwood
4 games away from Melb
1 in Perth (4 hr flight)
1 in Adelaide (2 hr flight)
1 in Brisbane (2 hr flight)
1 in Sydney (1 hr flight)
9 hours flying
Essendon
5 games away from Melb
2 in Perth (4 hr flight)
2 in Adelaide (2 hr flight)
1 in Sydney (1 hr flight)
13 hours flyingCaptain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

The real issue is Away Vs Home games....
Not the travel time. They're all professional athletes that have all week to get there and all week to get back. It's not like they finish work on Friday evening and fly somwhere for a game that night.
Swans

8 games away Subi
4 games away from Melb

I was specifically referring to the point that the Swans travel further.
Comparing the Swans to WCE, the WCE away games are a much bigger burden than for the Swans, while their home games are a bigger advantage.
Comparing the Swans to Melbourne based teams, they play more games without travelling, but have less true home games. Collingwood plays 18 games in Melbourne but only 5 are against interstate sides. Essendon has only 4 against interstate sides of 17 at home.
So the Swans get:
11 home games
2 neutral games
9 away games
West Coast
11 home games
1 neutral game
10 away games
Collingwood
5 home games
13 neutral games
4 away games
Essendon
4 home games
13 neutral games
5 away gamesLast edited by NMWBloods; 24 July 2007, 04:31 PM. Reason: Corrected RP's data error - thanks Hammo - will check independently next time...Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Your argument is based on dodgy maths, RP.
West Coast and Freo play 10 games away from Subiaco, not 8. It's 11 home games plus 1 away game against the other WA team. And those really are away games because each club has in excess of 40,000 members.
Same for the SA teams.
Sydney have 11 home games and 2 in Canberra, which are effectively home games anyway given the crown support down there.
So effectively, that's 13 'home' games for Sydney and only 11 for the SA and WA teams.
And if you want to see a tough draw for Malbourne teams, look at the Kangaroos (admittedly partially due to their own design). They're due to play at MCG, Telstra Dome, Aurora, Subiaco x2, AAMI, Carrara this season.
Collingwood play so many games in Melbourne because every other Melbourne team wants to play a home game against them to collect a huge gate."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

Collingwood have 15 at the MCG, 11 of which are "home". They also play another 3 at the dome, and as above, they get a lot of support. Effectively, they get 18 in front of their supporters.
Carlton get 8 at the MCG, 8 at TD.
Essendon get 8 at TD, 9 at MCG.
Even Hawthorn get 8 at the MCG, 5 TD and 4 at Aurora... If we ust the rationale above (That Manuka and TS are "home" games), then that's 17 that they get!!
Frockers get 12 at Subi - But at least they're all at Subi! I'd gladly trade our "Home" gaes at Manuka for the SCG.... TS for that matter too!
Even Geelong go OK with 8 at SS and 7 at TD.
The point is, the more grounds you play at, the less you play at home. Vic teams really only play at MCG or TD.
Yeah Kangaroos get stiffed but they sold themselves into that so no real sympathy there.
I'd happily take 6 games at TS and none at Manuka or vice versa on top of our true home games. It's only when you play there regularly that you do truly get the home ground advantage...
That's the point being made here....Comment

Freo and West Coast dont have it that great because they alternate each week at subiaco.
I do see where your coming from, the Pies have all their Games at the G and prob Telstra.Comment

Back on topic for a minute, how shocking is the Kangaroos' run home. They have done wonderfully well to get to where they have, but even after tomorrow's game against in Tassie, where it's always tough to beat the Hawks, they've got games against the Lions (away- looks really tough up at the Gabba now they're in form), West Coast (at TD, but after the Eagles demolished the Dogs there last night that is going to be a tough one to win), and Geelong (the form team of the comp, tough to beat no matter where they play). They could quite easily drop at least 2-3 of those. Port could also drop a couple with trips to Tassie and Geelong, otherwise not too bad. *If* the swans did go 5-0 from here, I'm sure that will be enough for 4th spot.Comment
