I drafted this response to the pile of dog droppings masquerading as the Jolly-Wood thread, as Liz closed it I post as a new thread rather than totally waste my time.

Is Jolly?s rumoured departure the first time our club has been placed in the can by ?go home? factor? No, and it won?t be the last either.

Memo to our recruiting people: only recruit blokes from out of town if:

They are unattached.
They are within 2 or 3 years of retirement.
They have hooked up with a girl from Sydney, NSW or overseas.

Any player with a romantic connection with an interstate girl is a huge gamble..

As a rider, single blokes should be encouraged to fall in love with athletic Sydney girls. That will lock them into this city for good, and increase the chance of future F&S selections!

A happy footballer is a good one. If a bloke is being hassled by his T&S, is pre-occupied by family issues or has a love life is in tatters it will be reflected by poor performance on the paddock.

With the go home factor, it?s better to GRO the player concerned immediately while he has the best trade value. If he stays, things will only get worse. If Jolly?s T&S is giving him that much grief the club should cut it?s losses immediately.

All the best to the Jollys if they do indeed head back to Melbourne, Darren played a big part in bringing us a flag in 2006. Did we originally sign him for 3 years (sorry if it is in the locked thread)? I guess that doesn't really matter with no free agency.

If it is true, I wonder how long the club has known about it and whether it would have impacted on our selection of DOK (I realize we picked up a ruckman anyway, just curious if we missed out on anyone super dooper (I've had a quick look over the 2006 list but can't think of size etc.). I know we picked up Currie (and White, but he seems more key position size, although has great athleticisim and does a good job around the ground for the magoos), but he would have always been a long term kind of guy.

I doubt it would have affected our recruitment last year. The draft didn't seem that chocka with ruckmen and, as you point out, we did take one anyway.

This year's draft reportedly has an unusually large number of promising young rucks - maybe as many as 8 or so from what I've read. They still represent a long term investment though. It would be unreasonable to expect either Currie or anyone we draft this year to make any impact at senior level in 2008.

I think my concern with the potential loss of Darren is that I can't really see anyone waiting in the wings right now to step in for next year and I'd rather not be trying to trade for a ruckman again. I wonder what a Jolly + 1st round trade would bring us? Jolly + 2nd round pick for Fevola, draft best young ruck available and cross our fingers that Spida stays healthy and one of the youngsters can come on quickly?

Jolly was seated at our table at the trivia night last year when Mrs J was heavily pregnant. He told us that she was miserable and missed her family terribly and dreaded the idea of having a baby so far away from her mother. He also said they hated Sydney and would be packed up and on the first plane back to Melbourne when his playing days are through. While he came across as a very nice fellow, he also seemed very under the thumb and I got the impression that it's not him that makes the big decisions in the household.

And a good place to start would be 2nd stringers from another club (Just like Jolly was). And use the possible top ten pick to either draft or trade for a decent, skillful, fast midfielder.
