We played Collingwood 3times this year under lights and they are a team we dont match up well against - 4 other matches - close loses to West Coast x 2 Essendon & draw to Brisbane under lights and we were only 1&1/2 games from top 4.

Maybe the luck, bounce of the ball or the footy gods just werent with us this year

Doesn't explain the insipid performance in the first Saints game or why they got completely jumped early by the Roos. And even while we can point to the Essendon loss as an unlucky one (given the fat posts and Buchanan's late point), reality is that the scoreboard flattered the Swans a bit that day, as it probably did in the first Eagles game.

And while I think a lot of credit is due to the Pies for the way they have dismantled the Swans three times this year, I still don't understand what it is they did to make the Swans intensity drop quite as much as it did (compared, for example, to their intensity against the Hawks the weekend before) unless there were some additional internal factors involved too.

I really do think its the style of play and tactics Collingwood used against us, hardly a handball in the back half, fast long kicking not allowing us to slow down the play or create stoppages and knowing we like to handball coming out of defence their midfielders helped to block our run out of defence.

IMO Swans lost confidence and the intensity dropped of. Many of Collingwoods goals came from our defensive errors which may have contributed to confidence and intensity dropping away?

Anyway your normally well across all of this with some great insights I have enjoyed reading your posts again this year.

        Cheers

Is it not possible that the team were just tired and over it all as Roos has said? I've watched the footage in the rooms and haven't seen the same passion and excitement for a win this season singing the song.
I don't think the team have really enjoyed their footy this year. I know when I get tired and don't enjoy my job I don't put in as much effort.

Now you've bought it up - I think we should trade Kenny for Joffa or the Fat Bastad from West Coast. Thoughts?

                Intersting one,

I reckon the skinnily challenged West Coast chap would suit our style best.

Joffa insists on having funny hair and we dont do silly wigs anymore

One of the problems back in 1996 is that we didnt renew our list after the 1995 year, a year most people would sya that we overperformed. If we had have made a number of changes who knows Eade may have still been coaching.
We MUST make a number of changes and our Red and White online members have enunceated those over many weeks. Surely the Swans heirachy can see the same people who have to go.
Agreed( except I think you mean 1997 . 1996 was our GF year)
It seems to me that Roos is fast emulating Eade...All be it with much more success behind him. ie Topping up with mature players, playing favourites.
If he continues down this path, IMO, we will end up with a fractured old list,
desperately needing reinvention and re- energizing. 2002 here we come.

Footy seems rather simple to me in terms of the playing list. If you stay stagnant, then no matter how good your team is you are going to go backwards sooner or later. While we did fantastically well to win a flag in 05, I felt the warning signs were there last year and the sirens have been blazing this year. We do need to make changes, but Roos simply wont, I think we all realise that. Obviously the Premiership credits are far from running out for some that they should of run out for quite a while ago. If we dont make changes, as already emphasised we are going to go backwards fast and instead of spending a couple of years on the slide while rebuilding could face a long period of nothingness like Carlton as we will be forced to rebuild a whole squad at once rather then intergrating new talent into it.

Id go and support someone else if we traded to get Joffa- talk about an ultimate wanker lol!

*First meeting of the match committee to plan for 2008*

Paul Roos enters the room, hair frazzled still wearing sandals and a roughly half assed buttoned hawaiian shirt, he sits at the head of the table upon his 5, $250 000 a season assistants. He sits down and pulls a comb out his pocket and starts to comb his dangy, mangled hair. Little do the other coaches know that he just ripped half a dozen bowls from his bong in his mercedes SLK in the carpark. He's as baked as @@@@@.

John Longmire: Paul, glad for you to come, Umm I think we forgot to tell you the meeting was to start at 8am though my apoligies.

Paul Roos: You told me godammit, I'm just a little late is that a problem?

John Longmire: (looks at watch, time reads 10:35) Not at all sir.

                      Paul Roos: Good.

John Blakey: We're talking about the first few rounds, which players should we include? Jarrad Moore?, or perhaps Matty Laidlaw, or who? What we can see from 2007 is that some of the older guys from the 2005 premiership are starting to decline, so perhaps blooding some younger guys instead would be a good idea. And since our premiership window has closed we believe it's time to start looking to the future.

Paul Roos: Noooo... wait I GOT IT, I GOT IT, the PERFECT players to select in season 2008!!!!!

John Blakey: Who are they? Schmidt? White? Both?

Paul Roos: No Godammit you delusional bastard.....

LETS RETAIN BEN MATHEWS AND JUDE BOLTON!!!!! (thinks, rubs his mangled hair)

... THEY PLAYED IN THE 05 PREMIERSHIP SO OF COURSE THEY WILL WIN US ANOTHER ONE!!!!! EUREKA IM FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!!

John Blakey: @@@@@ this, we're going to Carlton.

Just joking. I agree we have been a bit harsh on Roosy, but he does need to wake up and smell the roses.

What were everyone's impressions of Roosy yesterday.

Standing on the boundary was interesting, but it still looked like he had a fair amount of control.

What did everyone think of the game plan he put in place?

Don't think the game plan will change much. Roos has tried to increase the speed and skill of the rebounding and delivery into the forward line with Mattner. The combination of Mattner. Kenneally and Milceski would have been devastating at breaking the lines and ensuring quick delivery. Unfortunately some of that will now be lost. We are still missing a Paul Williams skillfull and fast outside midfielder. It clearly won't be McVeigh and Bird is not that type. Perhaps the answer is to play Goodes more on the fringe of the midfield as a genuine running long kicking midfielder rather than sitting back off the pack where he tends to be positioned a lot of the time. Goodesy plays a lot of his game as a "midfielder" betwen the middle and centre half back. With the growing maturity and availability of LRT and the marking power of White maybe Goodes could be pushed more into the middle in the corridor. Maybe this kind of nip and tuck is all we need. Goodes final quarter goal in the 06 Grand Final should be a template.
