Players in the balance and what's in store.

Hall - 2008 will be a very telling year. We can forgive him because he's been injured all season, and clearly there's something going wrong upstairs, but by the end of next season, we'll know whether he should be given the boot, or locked in until he retires.

Leo Barry - The only way he can legitimately claim a spot in our starting 22, is if he's taking the 3rd or 4th best forwards. Throwing him to lions by giving him assignments such as Rocca, Lloyd or Lynch, is laughable and embarrassing.

Mathews - He still has a role to play, if only until Schmidt or DOK make consistent inroads, then he'll be lucky to hold his spot.

O'Loughlin & Davis - I don't know what to make of this combination, because in some ways they're too much alike, but on the other hand they could compliment each other, if our midfield group would give them more direct chances with cleaner delivery into the forward 50. The best scenario for me would have Davis coming out of the goal square, and MOL playing as the crumber/goal sneak.

Dempster - Personally i think he'd be more dangerous as a player who rotates between wing and HF, and not as a running HB. We have Kennelly doing that job very well, and Barlow could assist him if he keeps improving like we're all hoping, freeing up Dempster to do what he does best, driving the ball 60-80 metres down the ground, into the goal square.

Thoughts on this list or players who i've left out?

I reckon Barry Hall should be retrained as a monster backman. HIB rule is a major hurdle, but most of this year he has been an absolute trainwreck. Chaos wherever he goes. O'Keefe could fill his role as a leading, marking forward while our midfield which will include an unleashed Malceski and Tadgh won't be so intimidated to look for Mr Angry.

lol Hall as a monster backman Id like to see that! I thought we had Leo Barry there to give away the frees?
What I want to see is Hall move to the goal square, ROK become the leading marking forward at CHF, Micky O & Davis in the pockets or as said earlier up Micky O as a crumber.

I think Dempster could be very useful in the role proposed, but imo the man that should be driving the ball into the forward line is Malceski. He has absolutely superb delivery when on song and I think should play in the midfield if we find a way to fit him there.

IMO Matthews is past it and unfortunately I think Leaping Leo is as well. He might improve a bit with a good pre season under his belt, but he doesnt have the speed he once did and the new rules certainly havent helped his cause. As you said Deadly he only really can play on 3rd or 4th forwards and even then I think we probably have better options overall. It would be sad to see him go but it could quite possibly be the best result for all.

Our FB position is a concern but Im an advocate of giving Leo a run back in the FWDs for his last couple of years, he is a strong mark and moves well.

The problem with my view is there doesnt appear a ready made full back to replace Leo- mainly when we come up against the larger forwards. Maybe Heath Grundy could be groomed for the role and play similar to Scarlett....hehe I know

        Cheers

          Funny you should say that:

By my reckoning Bevan & Phillips will be delisted with Brennan & Barlow elevated to the senior list. (Jack to remain a rookie)
That means the players on the edge are Buchanan, Crouch, Doyle, Matthews, Simpkin & Vogels.
I believe that three of those six will be delisted giving us four draft picks (#11, 28, 44, 60) I also honestly believe that we can get a third round pick for Buchanan if he is on the open market rather than a delisting.
It will indeed be a very interesting off season!

If Buchanan was to be traded it would be for much more than a third round pick!

According to Brett Allison, Grundy felt confident down back..it didn't look that way

I would much prefer to see Barlow and Jack promoted from the rookie list then Barlow and Brennan. I just dont rate Brennan from what I saw this year. I might agree he has potential, but imo he wont make it.
Vogels and Phillips I feel are all but gone, so will Doyle I expect no matter what happens with Jolly. Dont know about Simpkin, but wouldnt be unhappy to see Matthews and Crouch fall by the wayside but we all know that wont happen.
Buchanan wont go anywhere, his premiership credits havent run out just yet- saying that Im still suprised he didnt play against the Pies. If only for nuisance value and maybe get a couple of pieboys off their game by taking their mind off playing footy. I reckon you would get a 2nd round pick for Buchanan or maybe a straight player for player swap.

                          Simon Phillips is G.A.W.N.

I'm sorry to say it but it's true.

Lol I never took Buchanan to be that way inclined.... but when I think about it he always seems to check out Schneiders hairdo extra closely as they go to run out onto the field when they play in the same match together
