The problem with going for Daniher is that the family is due for a dud. Law of averages says dont punt on him.

The club who is eligible for f/s has to nominate which pick it would like to use, and as I understand for another club to take the selection they have to use a pick from an earlier round. The f/s club can then choose to use an earlier pick if they need to.
Then there is also the question if another club wants to take the f/s selection with an earlier pick and it sits on a round threshold, ie, pick 28 second round selection, and pick 29 is a third round selection...that hugely increases the values of the round the picks are allocated in...
With Darcy Daniher same as above applies accept that Essendon holds the upper hand as they have the lower picks because there as two clubs that hold F/S rights over him and therefore if both club match Round Selections, the lower the pick used, thats where he'll end up. Plus we (or anyother club for that matter) can't use traded draft picks in this process, you go with what you start with and if you trade away a pick you lose the right to bid in that particular round.
That also needs to take in account stuff like player agreeing to go the clubs in question, but there doesn't seem to be any reason why Darcy Daniher wouldn't want to join the Swans if we win the bidding process. He has been to Swans matches as a guest of the club and has trained with Essendon because he goes to School down here.Once was, now elsewhereComment

That's not how I understand things work Robbie.
If a player is eligible to go to more than one club under the FS rule, first he has to agree to an offer from one of those clubs to be nominated under the rule. That is no different to past years. If there were two clubs with rights, the ones with the lower picks had no advantage.
If Daniher agrees to an offer from either the Swans or Bombers (and he's not obliged to agree to one from either club), the other club then has no rights different to the other 14 clubs in the competition. They can still try to outbid the nominated club but it makes no difference that they have some sentimental claim over him.
So the fact that the Bombers have lower numbered picks than the Swans makes no difference to the process.
That said, the Bombers probably are in the box seat given he lives in their backyard and most 17yos would probably rather stay at home if they're given the choice. So unless the Swans make a pitch to him that he finds really attractive, or there is some issue with who the next Essendon coach is (eg if it's his uncle, that might affect his decision), he'd be more likely to plump for them.Comment

As far as I'm aware, he is only living in Melbourne at the moment because he is going to one of the Private school's down here, just as many NSW kids have in the past. So the stay home factor isn't great a concern, considering he has said he was only training with the Bombers already because of their locaticality and not preference over the Swans.Once was, now elsewhereComment
