Geelong's midfield this year is close to the best I've ever seen, I think a large part of it comes down to their apparent willingness to do ANYTHING to keep that ball alive. It is clearly drilled into them. Sadly our midfield will do ANYTHING to kill the ball.
yep. two contrast. it is a shame

They control the corridor and go through it so quickly its very difficult to defend against.
yeah it was really good to watch geelong do this

No matter what happens from here, I think the Geelong side of 2007 will be remembered as the entertainers. This is one of the great things about the game, that it's possible to win premierships with vastly different playing styles, and that's why I find comparing grand final scores from different years rather meaningless. We won in 2005 because we were the best at executing our team's game plan, same with Geelong this year. If all teams played the same way it would be rather boring, IMHO.

While I agree that we've become far too defensively oriented, and it would be great to see our midfield drilled to keep the ball alive more often a la Geelong, I think part of the reason why Geelong looks so good is that they do have an incredibly talented midfield and spine. Teams still have to play to their strengths. In most cases it will be a mixture of attack and defence, but obviously a team with Geelong's flair is more suited to attack.

As an AFL Member I went to the Grand Final yesterday. Obviously it was a different feeling with the Swans not being in it...and I was jealous!

I have to say nothing compares to our Red and White colours. Both years our supporters stood out around the ground. And after the presentation our red and white confetti was much better.

My brother barracks for Geelong so it was good to see the Cats win. However, after half time it was boring because Port just didn't want to fight.

I keep going over in my head....is it better to lose by a point or be beaten by over 100? At least we know our team never gives up.

Not sure if you could see on the TV but there were about three groups of West Coast Supporters sitting around the ground. Very cocky they were thinking they were going to make GF again.

Hopefully we can improve and be there next year .

I said the same thing yesterday that the red stands out so much better.

That confetti is just a load of crap. You can't see anything through it while it's still being blown out....

                I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

The entertainment the past two years was much better. What is so bad about a Choir singing the club songs?????? What is so bad about Waltzing Matilda??? They didn't need to scrap everything to make it "cool"

                  2. Personal point of view only - but a MASSIVE let down after being in two grand finals. Didn't even feel like Grand Final day, it has always been my favourite day, but for the first time ever, really didn't feel like it. (hopefully the Swans felt like that too and get back there real quick!!)

                  3. Geelong were beyond awesome, I was actually enjoying how brilliant they were in the end, but, it was a pity though, I watched it with a fair few League loving boys and they were rightly bored by it. The AFL were extremely spoiled by the past two Grand Finals. I had forgotten just how average so many Grand Finals are. I think our two and the 2002 Pies/Lions GF are the only ones in recent memory that really gave that true "excitement" for neutral/new fans.
I really enjoyed the club song part of the pre-match entertainment in 2005-2006 and couldn't understand why it wasn't done the same way this year. It seemed to me they gave supporters of the Cats and the Power short shrift on this score.

That's just my opinion - the games in '05 and '06 could easily have been blown open before 3QT time but the team in front was unable to take advantage of their dominance and missed too many chances to score when they should have.

Interestingly Port's midfield did pretty well with clearances, particularly out of the centre early on. Geelong defence and run from the backline were superb though.

What I especially like about Geelong's game is that they don't chip it around and work it forward. The use the corridor and kick it long. So many times they would kick it 50m or more to a one-on-one contest deep in the forward line. Puts a lot of pressure on the defence and makes it much harder to get numbers back to either help out or run the ball out. I think this part of the game was successful mainly due to Geelong's good play rather than Port's bad play. May have delivered half their goals in the first half.

This game style is very effective is executed well and is something we are seeing more of

After two grannies where the result was a combined total of five points, the Geelong shellacking was getting really boring by half time.

My friends were renting a house at Bundeena, so we turned the tele off and went for a walk in the National Park. Got back in time to see Geelong get their medals.

Whitewash grannies are a bit boring. I think I'm a bit spoilt for the "edge-of-your-seat" grand final. Sydney Vs Criminals were the only ones in recent history to provide two.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
