WC could be counting the cost of Cousins / Eagles investigation (merged thread)

From April 29, 2007 meeting with the AFL
"The Eagles have been put on notice that if they appear before the Commission again they will be subject to the full force of the 1.6 rule of conduct unbecoming which can lead to a fine, suspension, loss of draft picks or premiership points," he said.
I doubt they will lose points as the Season is over, or suspension, but a fine and possible loss of draft picks will hurt the future of the clubs success.

And then there are the sponsors.

I heard this morning that the AFL has a preference for the club to deal with the matter under implied threat of removing draft picks etc. Was also inferred that the AFL would deregister Cousins if another club sought to pick him up.

In my personal opinion...assuming he has really been busted, the AFL should:

    1. Immediately step in and deregister Cousins,
    2. Also deregister Chick if he is found guilty of a drug related charge
    3. Change the three strikes policy to two strikes (not retrospective)
    4. Put all players on notice that players charged with drug offences (recreational that is) will be charged with bringing the game into disrepute and face the threat of deregistration.

The AFL are paying the penalty for not taking a zero tolerance stance. Blind Freddy could have foreseen this. If the AFL thought that Cousins would clean up his act, particularly given his history, acquaintances and absolute lack of contrition, they were particularly stupid. Why can't they see the terrible damage this is doing to their image of the game.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

The official line from the Eagles.."we think this is the best decision for Bens health"..How pathetic. He has been trangressing for years, not months, yet virtually nothing was done. Then when the @@@@ hit the fan in April, they send him off to a funny farm in the USA for a couple of weeks. Yeah, that'll fix everything. Then a few months later they welcome him back to Subiaco like a hero. Using the emotion to get their faultering season back on track. All the while spinning the line, they were doing what was in Ben's best interest. Bull@@@@. They were doing what all AFL clubs try to do....win games of football. There is a definite conflict of interest here and it is the AFL which needs to come down hard on clubs that turn a blind eye. They should also stop dancing around with players association, and if they are serious about controlling illicit drug use then 1 stike and your out. Harsh I know, with occasional players being thrown out for 1 mistake. But in the long run it would stop any chance of a ballooning culture of drug use occurring.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

Ah yes, you see, WCE had a "duty of care" to the AFL and they failed to protect the reputation of the league and their sponsors.

          What dya reckon hammo?

Wouldn't count out the loss of points. It's been done before, albeit not in the AFL.

The NRL penalised the warriors 8 points (4 wins) prior to the 2006 season because of their dodgy drafting and salary cap issues.

I think the WCE should start out at minus 36 and work their way back up?

Maybe not minus 36 but at least a few games they should be penalised points

As for cousins this guy is the biggest d head and the Swans lost a game because of this d head

I would have never allowed this guy back into my football club if he did drugs

He promised that he would change and he reverted straight back

West Coast are now paying the price for what this guy and chick has done

There is no way they will lose points or picks now they have sacked him.

Possibly a fine, but no chance of anything else.

MMG, the AFL admin are pretty pissed off. They may decide to use the criminals as an example.

I will eat my pants if they lose premiership points, or draft picks.

After all, the WCE administration have acted responsibly....

The administration are the real villains in this piece IMO.

Because they had to, not because they wanted to.
