Ireland said this year the North Sydney game would be replaced by a late-afternoon, inter-club clash at Lakeside Oval at Moore Park on February 8. The following Sunday, the Swans will play Hawthorn in the opening round of the NAB Cup at Launceston's Aurora Stadium
Well not such fantastic news if you read the article, it actually says Lakeside Oval at Moore Park!!

Hardly surprising news with the season starting a week earlier than normal due to the AFL 150th year celebrations, they just don't have enough time to squeeze in an exhibition game before the real stuff starts.

We will get far more out of a full intra club trial with all available players playing than the North Sydney game at 16 a side.

It looks like they've edited the article - if you compare the line from Ireland that I quoted to the current version.
And the man who started it all, the Schneiderman . . . . .

I had a feeling last week that this news was coming, when I quite independently checked the outdoor ("Starlight Cinema") program this summer for North Sydney Oval. Unlike previous Februarys, movies were listed to be screen on every Friday and Saturday night in February 2008 at North Sydney. Was that a mistake? Now it has been confirmed that it wasn't.

It's a very disappointing piece of news, because I use to think it was a fantastic way to start the season- watching good footy in a relaxed, and quite beautiful atmosphere at North Sydney. I, (like everybody else including the players), were always so excited to know that the North Sydney game meant that the season was starting soon, and the long summer was coming to an end.

Does any know when that small Blacktown stadium as promised by the New South Wales government will be ready?

I am disappointed because it is the only preseason game in Sydney that actually gets some support. Interest in preseason of any code in Sydney is extremely limited. The Swans Nth Sydney game and League's Charity Shield are the only two real exceptions to that, so it would have been nice to keep it going.

I was wondering if they just meant at Moore Park. Still very dissapointing to not have it at NSO, it was a great way to get 10k people in to watch a pre-season game and was fantastic publicity for the code.

I've never been a fan of pre-season matches, so whether there are pre-season games that I can get to or not doesn't really bother me.

But I had to laugh at the hysteria when a pre-season game being changed to a practice match was announced, particularly when the typo suggested the practise match be played at a non-existant ground in Melbourne.

The NSO game was always a nice appetiser before the start of the season.
