Well done (My tip was Keiran Jack)

To be presented #14 by the living legends must be a thrill. Very big expectations have been placed on this kids head by everyone (especially those on this forum)

Have a red hot go is all that is expected. Skills will or won't develop over time. Have a dip! You just never know how good you may become till you have a go!

I agree, it is fantasic that #14 is back and running around and with a little luck might even have a run in the firsts this year??

    Good luck

      Bird lands on number 14

      Bird lands on number 14

NSW scholarship player Craig Bird will wear the legendary No. 14 jumper.

As the first scholarship player, I think it fitting that the Club has given him the No 14 jumper.

It will be a bit of pressure on him but I'm sure the Club is very impressed.

5 years has been long enough but perhaps the Club was waiting for the right pwerson to give it to.

Let's hope he plays firsts next year.

What a relief to finally see it back in circulation.
I hate all that sentimental crap about retiring a number - silly way to honour a past champion. Skilts has the B&F Medal and Kels has the race name after him - a much better way to honour their contribution than to bundle it all up into the significance of the guernsey they wore.
I hope Bird enjoys his footy and has a long and fruitful career.

I had originally believed that the number 14 should never see the light of day again as I didn't think anyone would be able to live up to it.
Now I have changed my mind, but I will reserve my judgement on the "Birdman" until I've seen him in action.
In the meantime congrats to young Craig & good luck in '08

If his performance in the AFL Canberra Grand final is anything like a pointer to his potential, then Im more then happy to see him wear the no 14. I have huge hopes for Birdman he really does look like he has the raw quality to make it.

I do get a bit sentimental over numbers with a historical relevance.

Comparisons are natural (and they will be plentiful) and his debut will receive additional publicity because of it. The Swans obviously believe a) he will play seniors b) he will be able to handle any comparisons thrown his way. So for that reason, I am quite excited to see how he goes!

Definately couldn't have said it better myself.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Bird was playing first grade for Nelson Bay as a 15 year old and carving up back then. He was always destined for big things. I think he'll go well but it is a grear honour for the young man to be handed that number.

                      #14 Out of retirement (official)

Nobody seems to have mentioned it here, but Craig Bird has been handed the number 14 Guernsey. Management felt that seeing as he is the first NSW scholarship holder to be promoted to the senior list, that this would be a good mark of a historic new beginning for the number worn by legnedary New South Welshman Paul Kelly (and the immortal Bobby Skilton)

                      Source is the Herald Sun.
