    Nominations open

Its a brand new season and the nominations for the Paul Bevan Appreciation Society are open.

Qualifications: Stout of heart and open of mind.

Meeting will convene at the public telephone, corner of Commonwealth and Reservoir Sts outside the Royal Albert Hotel, 7 sharpish.

    Still room on the bandwagon

Seriously any thoughts on Bevos improvement this year? I reckon his steady development will continue with a place in the defense consolidated (one of the bright spots in the bleak injury to the Eski) and taking on fully the heir apparent role from Benny Mathews. Probably will be given more midfield tagging roles. Potential leadership group member in three to four seasons.

What improvement? He was better in 2004.

Even when he was surrounded by young guys on Sunday, he still looked incompetent.

Based on what I saw in the NAB Cup he's a monty to fulfill that role this season... in Canberra.

I've got my players in Patrick Veszpremi, Daniel O'Keefe and Craig Bird. No more room for Paul Bevan.

            Bevan should have been dropped.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

The problem with the Bevo Bandwagon is it only has 1 seat and Connolly, you have got your posterior super glued to it. Thanks for the invite but I will pass on this occasion.

Having read this thread I am now convinced that all along you have been simply taking the P155.

Not at all. I seriously believe that there were good signs last year in the second half and that this season he will mature into a very good defensive pivot occasional tagging midfielder. Best to get on the bandwagon early as a late stampede (LRT) is so undignified.

"Pivot", what a wonderful old footy term. The Macquarie Dictionary describes it as, amongst other things "that on which something turns, hinges or depends".

It even states Aus Rules - centre
Rugby Union - a half back

                      Pivotal - of critical importance.

In the case of Bevo - delusional at the very least. If we have to depend on him then lets all head to the West gate or Harbour Bridges. What you are alluding to here is that he will be the primary defender.

But if you are referring to him in Rugby Union terms then that might be a different story.

Methinks you all won't realise what you've got until he's gone.
I think there are plenty of worse players going around in the competition than Bevan. Just ask the forwards he plays on.
Sure he can be frustrating, but there's not many that aren't from time to time.
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

I quite like Bevan. Unfortunately his good games are few and far between. I'd be quite prepared to back him in for the first few rounds and hope to see an improvement in consistency AND performance. I'd also be quite prepared to drop him back to reserves should he start 2008 the way he started 2007.

If he doesn't play well in the trial matches then he shouldn't be in for round 1. It's that simple.
