As the idea suggests, trading for older/recycled/unwanted players is always a risk.

But based on any reasonable assesment Sydney has traded intelligently and well over the last 12 years since the new era (Barassi).

It's another glass half full.......Sure we've picked up some excellent recycled trades like Williams, Shauble, Maxfield etc....but we also traded for...... Bomford, Daffy, Tingay, Chambers, O'Connor, Spriggs, Russell.....which empties the glass somewhat.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

We traded for Chambers and, I think, Bomford.

Daffy was technically part of a trade but taking him (and at least part of his massive salary cap burden) was a sweetener to Richmond for not only taking Stafford off our hands but also giving us a first round draft pick that was vital to securing Hall's services.

The rest were all drafted, not traded for, and I don't think any of them was taken with a draft pick higher than a third round pick. There clearly was an opportunity with that, especially given the very good players the Swans have drafted with 3rd round and beyond picks. But for every O'Keefe, Malceski and Goodes, there is a Hunt, a Sundqvist or a Thewlis. The strike rate is pretty low at that end of the draft (arguably it's low at any end of the draft), even if there are some gems to be found.

Great postings Liz,you have certainly made me put the thinking cap on.On Mattner,I feel it is too early,on what I have seen and heard,to judge him.It is a big adjustment for him moving from his home state(where you are recognised as a public figure) to Sydney(where you are just another face in the crowd),to meet new people, join a close knit footy club, learn the operations of the Swans, etc etc.He has plenty of time to prove himself and I hope we have done well with this trade.Good luck to Marty.

I have no reason to doubt that Mattner will be a gun for us. He has lots of run and great attacking instincts on the rebound a-la Tadgh, Malceski or, dare I say it, Leo Barry. He'll fit in just fine and will be an asset to the team - dont let 1 trial game mislead you.

His run out of defense is very much in the Leo style. Can get lost in the journey. The link up with Leo will be interesting
