Well, I've said it on numerous occasions - there should be teams in Darwin and Tasmania (Launceston).

There's enough interest in the state and territory; and it would make it a true "national" competition.

Thats what the AFL is all about these days. So Tasmania, no matter how much support they would have, would not attract the corporate $$$$ so Fat Andy can increase his salary each year.

Make it two teams on in the South and one in the North and then he can be making some money that way.

As much as I would like to see it, there is probably not the population (plus the north south divide) or the money in sponsorship for a team to survive in Tassie.

1) I do not support a Tasmanian team
2) I will only watch one game of football this weekend.
3) I think that a team in western Sydney will work.

As a Tasmanian, I will agree that Tasmania CLEARLY deserves a team. A true AFL state that has produced so many champions across the last century or so. There would be more true AFL fans in Tasmania (Pop. Est 500K) than Sydney (Pop. Est. 4 million).

Unfortunately though, this can only occur if the State Govt would be willing to fund around 60% of it for at least the development years and somehow work out something that would keep the South, North and N/W fans happy.

Both of these things probably wont happen anytime soon.

I heard (can't remember where), that a few years ago the govt was prepared to back the formation of a team. However, the north/south/nw problem is the one that will be hardest to address.

I have privately thought for years that if the AFL was to expand the first port of call should be Tassie as they are the only Aussie Rules state without a team. I would definately look there instead of a 2nd team in Sydney because I don't believe the Sydney market is ready for a 2nd team for the forseeable future. However,I honestly would have no problem with establishing a team on the Gold Coast.

The north-south rivalry is so intense that it would eat at any concept of a unified team down there. For example they pumped money into footy at York Park because Hobart got the cricket at Bellerive & the Tassie government had to be seen to not be biased towards Hobart all the time. To prove my point, there is no longer a unified Tassie footy league rather a northern & southern one.

The Tassie Devils VFL team is seen as a southern team. Hawthorn are seen as a northern team to people from the south.

Tassie is also very small financially & would only have local businesses supporting it. A VFL team is probably the best they could hope for. And they aren't supporting that horribly much either as is, so....

I think that the argument used that Tassie doesnt have the population is a crock. Surely there are more people living in Tassie than there are in the Geelong area? Or the Gold Coast for that matter.
