No. Every time Roos does something that seems stupid, somehow it works out. I admit, there is a reason I'm not in the coaching box. Roos dropped Davis, and kept Bevan in the side. Davis is playing @@@@, while Bevan is playing the best footy of his life. I thought Roos had gone insane when he traded Schneider and Dempster for a second round pick, but we haven't missed those two players at all. Roosy isn't doing anything wrong, no matter how much us lounge chair experts like to think he is. We didn't win on Saturday because the Roos played really well, and pressured us. We didn't play that badly. The Kangaroos are a really good side. Roos didn't make any major @@@@ups that I could see, except perhaps Leo on Thompson.
I was expecting the Swans to do @@@@ this season, so as far as I'm concerned, Roos is exceeding expectations.
I'm really in two minds as to the footy we play. It is God awful to watch at times. Yet we can snap out of it when we want to run forward & score goals, as we did against Port.
Roos has blooded the kids far better than I thought he would have the gumption to. All the players I had hoped would get the call up have done so. And several others have as well.
I guess coaching us to play to strangle the life out of games is kind of smart coaching. We can win whilst we are lacking key forwards & never lose by much even if we are playing terribly. That means our percentage is nearly always in the positive & that we can sneak up & overtake teams with one decent quarter for game.
But the fact is, the Swans are selling the code of AFL in NSW. Nobody wants to see 20 men around the ball like we saw for much of the 3rd quarter in particular. Good teams know how to counter this sort of tactic anyway; Geelong sure well blew us away last weekend. Collingwood can now beat us home or away with ease. It is only iffy teams like Port & Brisbane who we dominate regularly..
We are going well I guess. But isn't Roosey losing concept of the big picture, that footy is a form of entertainment. And that we are trying to sell the product of live AFL footy to a largely skeptical audience.
I am on the fence I guess here (typical Libran)

This is part of what I was trying to get across. We could watch exciting footy every week & watch Essendon. But we'd also see teams kick cricket scores against us every week as well.
Even if we had won yesterday, it didn't stop the fact that the match was mind-numbing boring for 75% of the match.

However, I will dispute your sentence on Kirk. To look at him, he's the LRT of an earlier generation - gangly and awkward and his kicking looks terrible. But I was thinking yesterday that he really has the rare ability that only the greatest midfielders have - players like Kerr and Hird and Judd. He has the ability to get a ball away from a crowd of players all seeking it and then they all seem to slow down while he disposes of it - more than often to the best option. There was one stage yesterday where he was on the bottom of a pack and then he was clear and grabbing the ball from a tangle of legs and then found space to kick it to a teammate. The others certainly look better but he's just as effective.
And it's apparent that he's an inspirational captain - both from what he says and how he leads from the front. So back to the slogan at the bottom of your posts: Nick will never know how good he could have been. Kirk will know he could not have achieved more. I know which one I'd rather be when I retire.Comment

I understand people want goals scored, but I think a few in the media have implanted this in the minds of many and now people think that if goals aren't being scored, a game is crap. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and everyone is different...I have no problem seeing a good contest, no matter how many goals are scoredGo you mighty BLOODBOYS!Comment

I'm not accepting your premise that, in the reverse, would suggest that any AFL coach could have taken that team to a premiership. But you're welcome to your view.

As for my signature, I think you fail to understand it. I am of the opinion that just as Davis was born with more natural sporting ability than Kirk, that Kirk was probably born with a greater capacity for hard work and self discipline than Davis. Just as some people can kick more smoothly than others, run faster, jump higher, conduct more complex calculations, write great novels, work a room or belch the alphabet, some people can work harder than others even though both are trying their hardest.
If Kirk had a little more talent, his last kick would have gone through half way up the posts and Sydney most likely would have won. Yet it is unfair to blame him for that. However, it is not unfair to lay it thick on Davis for not putting in the effort than many think he should be capable of, without really understanding his make up.
And FWIW, I know which one I'd rather be when I retire too.Comment

Soccer's a completely different game.
As I've said many times, it's not just goals. It's the whole package. Nearly 200 ball ups and 30 players around the ball is not a great spectacle and only one-eyed... no, blind Swans supporters could possibly think that. For our other games, frequent occurences of low scoring and lots of stoppages are not particularly entertaining - crowds don't turn up to watch ruck duels and sideways chips to unmarked players. There's a reason they don't make highlight tapes.Go you mighty BLOODBOYS!Comment

In Australian Rules footy we are brought up on open running play & contested (mainly aerial) possessions. Maybe the AFL can introduce a "no inside 10 metre' rule so that only the two ruckman are allowed to entered a specified area. Until then coaches like Roos will use ball-ups as a chance to stifle games & to wear opposition teams out.
Watch for North to play terribly the week after playing us. Many teams do, you'll find.
