Since when does Roos and the SSFC have an obligation to entertain first and win second? Since when has this been the main objective in footy? FWIW I don't care how we play as long as we win. Winning is paramount and i think thats more important to Paul Roos and the club.

If you want to watch exciteing free flowing coast to coast style of footy go follow Geelong and any other team who are currently emulating the cats and have failed. Yeah lets allow the opposition to score 100 against us every week.

BTW those who are having a dig at Roos are not supporters from Melbourne are they? Have they been suckered, like many in Melbourne, by the mainstream media down there? it just seems those who are doing the complaning seem like the majority of fans from Melbourne who have a lot of issues with the way we play atm.

yeah its pretty obvious - but there seems to be this dislike for Paul Roos on here and in the footy landscape.

FWIW I think we are lucky to have someone like Roos who has done so much with an avg playing list. Another coach and we would have been playing for draft picks and would have been 75 years by now without a flag.

Gary Ablett Snr was a CAST-OFF, ditto Greg Williams (Carlton U19's), ditto Tony Liberatore. These footballers became superstars in their own right and within their own limitations (although Gazza had no limitations). C.Bolton is a star in his current form, Richards is a solid contributor, Leo has rarely had bags kicked on him and provides endless run out of the backline (and he wasn't a failed forward, just an injury-prone forward that was best in the backline free of injuries), ditto LRT and, if you are referring to the "failed hawthorn cast off" as L.Brennan, spare me the bull***t - he hardly plays in the backline and/or gets a game.

Your argument about the backline is flawed. They regularly are in the best 2 or 3 backlines in the competition in relation to scores against because they work as a TEAM. It doesn't matter if they are so-called CAST-OFFS or have flaws, as long as they do their job, which is to restrict the opposition from scoring.

BTW and FWIW - I love Roosy in the way that he coaches to the limitations of the team and our strengths. Good coaches recognise this and act upon these limitations and strengths. I would far rather a tight, slow-tempo "Sydney" style of football than the fast-running, mistake-ridden, soft tissue injuries and leaking of goals when the opposition counter attacks style of football that the Bombouts and a few other teams play !! Roosy's game plan has had success, as evidenced by every full year in the finals under his tenure consisting of two GF's, one Prelim, one semi and one elimination final. I also believe defence wins flags these days and you will notice that the Swans struggle to kick a score (so does the opposition) and the game is reduced to a slow tempo "Sydney" style of football when BOTH teams have a strong emphasis on defence. When the opposition doesn't have a strong emphasis on defence, the Swans play their other style of football, which is attacked mixed with a bit of tempo football out of defence.

I also couldn't give a rat's tossbag what style of football we play, as long as we WIN - or are competitive and/or have a red hot go losing. I cannot recall a game we have lost in the last 4-5 years that we haven't been competitive, which is all you can ask from the lads. Far different from the rabble that was thrown up under the auspicious coaching of Kinnear, Buckenara and Eade.

I also don't think kids, new supporters of the Swans, punters betting on the Swans and the majority of the Swans supporters cares if we played "pretty" or "attacking" or "footy the way it should be played" as long as we win and/or be competitive. Give me a spell guys !!

BTW - what is the correct way to play footy ? Is their booked that outlines how football "should be played" ? Do we go back to the kick to kick, mongrel flat punts of the 60's & 70's or the 8 goals per game of the 10's and 20's or the king hit behind play days of the 30's and 40's !!!??? Someone please advise where I can collect that book on how to play the correct brand of Australian Rules football......

Professional sport is meant to be a spectacle. Sunday was not. There needs to be a balance. Roos has the choice to play how he wants and spectators have the choice to complain about it.

Or are they people who have football for a long time and don't find ball ups very exciting - didn't Roos himself say no one comes to watch the umpires bounce the ball!

Sunday's game was appalling. Norths must share the blame though, we did not dictate the tactics entirely and North moved the ball very slowly when they had the chance to do otherwise. For years they played dour football and the great irony in 2005 when Demetriou bagged us was that North were the least attractive team to watch with their 'kickaround in circles' football.

It is the responsibility of the coach to win games. That's all. The AFL should be refining the rules to make the game more 'entertaining' or attractive to a wider audience. I believe that is what they are trying to do - though in my opinion they are not very successful.

As far as I am concerned
WINNING = ENTERTAINMENT
No matter how well we have played a game, if we lose I'm not entertained, I don't watch nor record the replay.
BUT, No matter how badly we play, if we win, I watch, record and keep a copy of the replay.
I really don't give a toss what opposition supporters think.

I agree. I don't think I've suggested that Roos should coach to entertain the crowd. What I have said that professional sport is about entertainment hence I don't understand how people can think that all that matters is winning no matter how bad the game (acceptable in the short term but not in the long term). What I would like to see is for us to play a more balanced mix between 'open football' and 'closed football'. I think that would make a nice balance of both success and entertainment, and I think it would produce a more effective outcome than what we are seeing.

I rarely enjoy watching our games anymore. I enjoyed the last 10 minutes of Sunday's game, but I nearly turned off before that. I am always interested in the result, but 'struth it was awful to watch most of Sunday's game. It wasn't even one of Liz's tight and engaging contests. It was just painful to watch (mostly).

Apart from the last 15 minutes or so it was a pretty awful game to watch, we do have this tendency to throw up the occassional shocker like Sunday's game, I think mainly because our style of play does look pretty ugly when we are not playing well, almost like under 10's footy (as I think NMWBloods commented a while ago), with so many players around the ball that there's very little structure.

IMO we're still a good side, but we won't win too many games unless we do SOMETHING about that forward line structure as on Sunday it ranged from awful to non-existent. It's not as if we don't have any talented forwards, though we do look a lot smaller in the forward line without Barry Hall.
