Matchups would be the only possible reason, but really, I think play him as a loose man in defence. He isn't bad on the rebound for a big man either.

Really? Smith is faster and fitter. We are coming up against a fast, fit side. I would have thought the benefits would be obvious. If Schmidt of Fosdike are deemed ready, then choose them ahead of Smith, but I don't think that's likely.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

I would rather have Craig Davis.

Nick is good in a winning side because he is a finisher, But when we need him to actually GET the ball well, thats another thing.

I'm not sure if you need a loose man in defence against the 'Dogs and he's probably not the one anyway.

Concept is okay, but I'm not sure if Smith is going to make much of a difference yet.

What do you do with Davo Then ??
I know we have differing opinions on Davo , though the last 2 weeks Davos form has been very ordinary to say the least.

I don't know what approach Roos is taking. But if he's going to become useful again then he needs to regain his confidence. Perhaps free him up and just tell him to get the ball and do something with it. Stop straightjacketing him with the 'Bloods' approach of lockdown games. See if he can just play some football again. That could be done in the seniors or reserves.

13 Goals in 2 Weeks in the twos, if that isnt going to give you confidence nothing will. Thats what would of Davo loves !! He loves kicking goals, doesnt matter what level as you said, thats what he is good at.
Right at this moment though I dont think he warrants selection due to poor
form at the top level, Simple as that.

He hasn't kicked a bag, but also hasn't gone goalless in 3 matches so far.
You boot a forward when he goes goalless for a few weeks straights.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

It was pretty clear yesterday that his confidence looked down. Similar to McVeigh last year - scared to make a mistake. His form is not good but he's not so far off to not warrant selection. As I said before he could so easily have kicked 3 goals and be involved in 2 others (instead of 1 and 1).

Davis just isn't a good enough overhead mark to be a focal point for the forward line, more of a goal sneak than someone who we can hope to get multiple bags of goals out of.

broadly speaking i disagree with nmw bloods views about our game plan. but i happen to agree with him on playing davis ahead of lrt against the dogs. i think davis is still someone other teams recognise as damaging. in truth davis would do well in a team which could deliver the ball accurately to the forwards advantage (although i still shudder from his failures in the last quarter in 2006 when that old bugger spoiled him repeatedly). unfortunately most of our inside 50 players struggle to do this - buchanan, bolton, barlow simply miss targets a lot. However he has to be respected as a player that can get the ball and hurt you. LRT no matter his strengths is not such a player. No-one respects his ability to hurt you inside 50 or outside 50. Teams regularly leave him alone so he can get the ball knowing that he won't hurt you. Who is LRT going to play on ? Minson ?? griffen ?? Mitch Hahn ?? Its hard to think of any player that really suits LRT.

I doubt he'll play to be honest.

No complaints from Roos - AFL - Fox Sports
However, struggling forward Nick Davis could find himself back in the reserves after a disappointing performance that included two crucial misses from regulation shots.

"He's struggling, no doubt, and I think we need to look at a way to get him back into form," Roos said.

"We knew when we brought him back in he hadn't done the things we wanted him to do, so it was a little bit of a risk and a little bit of a gamble.

"Sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't. This is one of the ones that hasn't paid off."

Davo requires a coach to have faith in him and provide him with moral support in the media for him to display the necessary confidence to perform. Roos has lost faith, and is not providing any moral support whatsoever. He's virtually writing him off. Whether that is warranted or not is another matter. I think he'll be dumped, which virtually means his chances of ever becoming a regular senior player again are zilch (regardless of how many goals he kicks in the magoos).
