State-of-Origin matches are one area where rugby league has a clearly superior product to AFL. It's because league has two clearly branded rivals with strong identities in NSW & QLD - there is no parallel to this in AFL. And AFL has much stronger club rivalries than rugby league, which is why an entire round is dvoted to it.

I would say VIC v SA is an equal if not far more intense. SOO doesn't work because WA and TAS and (teams in NSW and QLD) are also Aussie Rules states, whereas NRL only has NSW and QLD, so it's a lot harder for the AFL to have SOO.

I remember a story after a SOO (it may be true, it may not be true lol) That the SA fans were so pissed off after Victoria had beaten them, that the ripped off number plates of a car after the game, and did damage to the car. But the funny thing was, it was Tony Hall's car. A South Australian who was playing in Victoria at the time.

I heard that story on the radio one time.
