I can't stand Essendon. Probably because over the years, the performance of South Melbourne/Sydney against the Bombers makes for grim reading.
South's performance against Essendon up until 1945 was competitive enough - 47 wins, 52 losses. But then the wheels fell off big time - between 1946-1981, the club recorded only 13 wins and 51 losses. Swan supporters must have dreaded matches against the Bombers no matter where they were held - at Albert Park, the club managed 9 wins from 31 games, and only 3 from 29 at Windy Hill. Toss in a single win at Waverley, and that was the story of South Melbourne versus Essendon after the war.
Our record against them has improved only marginally since coming to Sydney - 17 wins, 1 draw, 25 losses. Let's hope we can add another win on Sunday.
