I agree however that there should be more prominent recognition of the contribution made by the Swans to the SCG and in turn, Sydney.

It's a cricket ground, yes, but so too is the MCG.

I certainly don't think that Micky O's SA origins should preclude him from being honoured. He lives here, bottom line.

Would the SCG trust even consider this? Nope - it was put to them about a month ago and their usual arrogant reply was "duh, it's a cricket ground".

They had the chance to change the name of the Brewongle Stand when they rebuilt it in the early 80's. I sat in that stand with the roof pulled off, ready for demolition, watching and cheering as Parramatta won their first premiership in '81 (then the Swannies hit town, woohoo).

The name obviously means more to the SCG than just some random, token indigenous name or they would have taken the opportunity then to change the name.

I also remember as a kid watching the 1977 Rugby League World Cup Final between Australia and Great Britain in the open area of the old Brewongle Stand.

According to Philip Derriman?s book ?Gassy Pitches and Glory Years-Grand Visions of the Sydney Cricket Ground?, at pages 249/250, the origin of ?Brewongle? was a mystery, dating back to sometime in the early 1900?s. It had been the unofficial name of the tea room in the old grandstand, developing into initially the unofficial name for the grandstand. Until 1951 the old stand was officially known simply as ?The Grandstand?. Brewongle is actually a hamlet near Bathurst, as well as an Aboriginal word meaning either ?camping ground? or ?meeting place?, (hence perhaps the tea room origins). Derriman?s comprehensive book does not however give any insight into why the SCG Trust in the late 1970?s and early 1980?s stuck to the name ?Brewongle?. Therefore from what I have read, there appears to be zero emotional attachment to the name, save its Aboriginality. Are the present SCG Trust so conservative as to not consider such a change?

There are a few recent precidents for changing the stand names. I don't know who Sheradin was, but he got the flick for Churchill. When first built the O'Reilly stand, which replaced the old Bob stand was named after a bloody politician. (Pat Hills?) What about poor Doug Walters, has he been wiped off the map? Given Doug's history, they should at least name a bar after him.

I wouldn't be too quick to suggest this. After another few years, Adam Goodes will be the club record holder, winner of multiple brownlows and upteen b&f winner for the swans!

But Magic was there first.
And as to him being born in SA, by the time he retires he would have been living in NSW for at least 15(?) years.

The Pat Hills stand being renamed as the O'Reilly stand is the only case of renaming. The Sheridan stand, after it collapsed, was replaced by the current Churchill stand. And Doug just got demolished....

My theory as to why the SCG Trust has retained the name "Brewongle Stand" relates to the fact that back in the early 80's when the re-development of the SCG occurred, there was simply no great aboriginal sporting identity whose name could come forward.

No aboriginal cricketer for instance had ever played for Australia. (Jason Gillespie has since emerged, but he's hardly a "great", and he has no links to NSW).

The only truly aboriginal Rugby League player by that time, Arthur Beetson, had only just retired. Besides Beetson is a passionate Queenslander, being that state's first State of Origin captain.

Mark Ella, (the only true great Union player), was still playing at that time. The Raa Raa have of course long left the SCG scene.

We now have a situation where the Sydney Swans have contributed nearly 30 years to the SCG, AND, the club boosts two great aboriginal players, in O'Loughlin and Goodes. An alternative to my earlier suggestion could be that when both players have retired, the Brewongle Stand could be renamed the "Goodes-O'Loughlin Stand", (the double name being in the spirit of the "Lillee-Marsh Stand" at the WACA in Perth)

They've reached back a long way into the past for the name of the new stand. Nothing against Victor Trumper, by all accounts a decent sort of guy who died way too young. I wouldn't want to be sitting in the top right hand corner of his stand though, because I'm not going to get a full view of the playing surface.

Makes no sense otherwise, there will be just a big section of the new stand with no view of one half of the ground.

Maybe that will be the solution. But let's face it, the powers-that-be don't care too much about those unlucky patrons who cop the restricted seating areas. If they did, they would have embraced an MCG-style solution and re-build the entire venue ages ago.
