How did we get McVeigh anyway?

Listed as our first round pick (pick number 5 overall) in the 2002 draft, but we didnt finish low enough in 2001 to secure a top 5 pick.

How did we get him?

We earned pick 7 but that was the year that Carlton had picks stripped from them - meaning they lost the first and second picks. Our 7th pick therefore became the overall 5th pick.

Not sure he was guessing - or that he guessed wrong if he was.

We were - for a short period of time - eligible for one NSW boy for free. And yes the rest of the clubs (IIRC with Eddie as their most vocal leader) objected and the concession was taken away. In this instance I have some sympathy for them.

Where Bedford wasn't quite correct is that this scheme had nothing to do with us recruiting McVeigh as it was gone by then. The only player Sydney recruited using this free pick was LRT.
