Well said JF: a positive spin..
I do find Roy's articles very tiresome these days: he just seems find any reason to bag the AFL. Even more remarkable when you consider he's married to Elaine Canty who used to be on the AFL Tribunal. I wonder what they talk about!!!

Another point not yet mentioned would be folks like myself.

Who have dropped the full membership for an Olympic Stad. 3 match pass. I understand we are around 8k...close to 10k who have purchased that ticket.

      ............sorry it's 12k

When you think we have ~19k Sydney members that is a huge number, and something the Swans should be mindful of in lieu of performances we have put up against the Pies out there in recent years.

Well, I don't think anyone really knows how a team in Western Sydney is going to go. It could be a complete flop or could do alright if they can tap the areas that have so far been untouched by AFL rather than competing directly with the Swans. That said, if they averaged 15-20,000 crowds in their first year I reckon the AFL would be delighted, all things considered.

While the membership figures for Sydney are a little disappointing, there are three main factors which have influenced this:

            * A lack of a large amount of cheaper GA memberships due to the Hill Stand construction (this is important when times get tougher as they allow people to drop back from a reserved seat but still take a membership)

            * The SCC members reserve, this is the same issue for Melbourne FC who have a large base of members who are MCC members and not football club members. Its the same for the Swans as there would be a large number of SCC members who would take up Swans memberships if they didn't get access to our games

            * The three match ANZ Stadium Super Pass, clearly a number of people have elected to go to our three or four biggest games a year at ANZ Stadium and just buy one of these tickets (12,000 sold)

Hopefully the end of construction on the Hill Stand next year will see an upswing in GA memberships to push as back to 22,000 to 25,000 in Sydney. The club sould look to go hard with some good packages that don't include a reserved seat, but must be careful not hurt the revenue they generate through reserves seats.
