I don't need to look it up, I'll take your word for it. As I couldn't sleep last night I was on here and your post rang some "alarm" (probably to harsh a descriptor) bells, hence asking the question. But posting in the middle of the night can do some strange things in your head.

EDIT: Apologies to connolly, I misread the post where you refered to a forward as a thug. It was not Barry Hall that you refered to.

Avoiding the more obvious, bernard toohey......just a great hardnut defender occasionally sent forward and kicked a couple.
Sports do not build character. They reveal it....Heywood Broun

Maxfield used to go alright too.

        No Stafford though.

What about Gareth John, didn't he have an emergency trachiotomy (sp?) on the ground or on the bench? That would have to qualify for being a hard nut, or at least a tough nut.

Skilton, because of the lack of protection offered the ball player then as compared to now, and because the ground conditions were dreadful then. Although I have no doubt Kirk would have handled that period as well as Skilton, the old fella has the score on the board.
And a bloke called Ron Clegg knew what he was doing too. (but dont forget I was watching the old blokes through maroon and blue eyes)

It was in relation to Lethal and Brown. I read "he" as "we".

Butch used to give us a lemonade if we hung round the door of his pub in Smith St... in school uniform too. Then on Saturday he turned into a giant. Never ever took an overhead mark though!

I'll grant you the Skilton's and Kelly's of this world, but for one genuine hard nut who never ever shirked an issue, you can't go past the great DR-J.

I still remember one game against Melborne on the MCG where Rhys-Jones seemed to take on the entire Melbourne team, which had players such as Croswell & Keenan, two absolute maniacs. Gave as good as he got and then gave some more. Even gave the runner something to go on with. I think Rhys ended up with a 6 game suspension for that game.

Never saw him shirk an issue ever. One of the few genuine hard nuts this club has ever had.

i saw him knock Buckenara out with one punch at the SCG. Bucky got back at us when he coached us though.
