Not adding much more to others' thoughts, but:
You can get away with being 3 or 4 real top-liners short against lesser sides. But against a bunch of hard-runners like the Dogs, who can beat us for pace at the best of times, to be lacking guys of the ilk of Malceski, Goodes, MOL and Barry is gunna hurt you.
- Crouch was terrific; really had the zip of old back.
- Liz's mid-week summary of Brabazon was spot on. Competed hard, did some team things, ran hard, even took a screamer mark. But getting a lot of the footy in your first game has its downside, too: people can more readily see what you have and haven't got. He is not really super-quick, and there is nothing about him that really hurts an opponent; certainly not an opponent with the Dogs' class.
- White was poor bordering on embarrassing for most of the day despite a terrific chase for a turnover in the 4th q. Put it down to experience and mark his card 'not before 2009-- and even then, only if he starts learning something about positional play'.
- Vespa was everything we hoped he'd be. And a bit more (apart from straight-kicking). The guy is built.
- BBBH played like a real professional; started woeful, but didn't lose it, didn't spit the dummy, and worked his way right back into the game as it went on, to the point where you'd back him to win a one-on-one by the end.
- McVeigh had one of those once-in-a-career games, and unfortunately what should have made it 7 for him (in the 3rd q) was one of those easy shots that cost us the game.
- There are no more Andrew Dunkleys in modern football. If you don't have good disposal skills, you don't play. You can't risk Brennan kicking in the back-lines or you give up goals that cost you the game, and you can't let him take crunch shots for goal or he'll cost you the game. After 6 years in the system as an adult (plus however long as a kid), it's fantasy to think his kicking will get up to standard. Great grab, Luke, but sorry.
- Grundy tried hard but for the most part took a big leap backwards today. It was like all of the improvement of 2008 went out the window. No doubt not helped by the fact that he was swung to every position on the ground at random intervals. For gawsakes, on the SCG next week stick him in the goalsquare and let him play FF for a night. I can guarantee he'll make a better fist of it that White did.
- JBolt is actually in good form. And is one of the best milkers of free kicks in the whole AFL.
- No matter what any of us say about LRT, it makes no difference. He's the great white project, now going on for half-a-decade. Bringing back Heath James is starting to look appealing.
- Bird gave a big slap in the face to whomever said during the week that he won't make it. Give him another season under his belt, and he'll be picking up Brownlow votes.
